I can see it both ways.

Is it fair for a person who just wondered in, bought nothing, has no real interest in the store or its merchandise to put his card in and win? Yeah the person who won might be excited because they won but the retailer doesn't win in that scenario and the customers who could have benefited didn't win either.

On the other hand, if you state in the rules that it is a random drawing then you have to follow them. I mean, otherwise it is both unethical and illegal.

It was a very informal drawing, at a mom-and-pop shop, nothing stated about random or whatnot, just a "drop your card and you might win a prize!" type thing. It really turned a few of those who won from "comes in now and again" to "here almost every day" customers. But I see why Bloog couldn't do that.

I can say I was hoping it was a forum regular, though.

Huzzah!! Cos I really want to post "winner, winner, chicken dinner."

Well, I DO wish a forum regular had won it, but they were selected purely by order number, so I couldn't have done that in any case. We've already had a few contests that required forum participation, and I'm sure we'll have more again. Possibly very very soon. ;)
