I have never been able to get animation/GIF files that I've uploaded to work in my posts. The animations always appear as static images. Would someone please please reply with instructions.

Animated images work just like regular images. Use the img tag to post them. For example:
This: [img]http://i.imgur.com/ukkhtop.gif[/img]
Gives you this:
