I've been "gaming" since the old Atari 2600 then Commodore 64 days. And if anyone doesn't have a clue what I am talking about then that'll make me feel very old.
I don't play games nearly as much as I used to. Between a job with lots of OT and a family, it's just hard to find the time. But here is what I used to play along with some things I do still play when I have time:
FPS games: Started way back with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom on the Commodores (64/128/Amiga). Moving on to the PC, my wife and I played Quake 3 a LOT for a while, even after it was many years old. Then we played Soldier of Fortune II online for a year or two and I got bored with it. I love the Call of Duty series, and although I only play online every now and then, I've played the single player version of each one several times.
For a while we were into Warcraft, but got bored with that as well.
These days, my wife plays various games on Pogo everyday, and we occasionally will play COD4 online or just against each other over the LAN. Lately just about all I play is the new Tales of Monkey Island series from Telltale games. Monkey Island was an old adventure game series from Lucas Arts years ago (that I got hooked on in the Commodore Amiga days), before they decided that Star Wars was the only thing anybody wanted to play.
Fortunately, Lucas Arts recently remade the original Monkey Island, which was nice (I hope they do more), and as mentioned above, Telltale Games has started a new series of games based on Monkey Island and even still has all of the "key" voice actors. It's an adventure game, and I know those sort of went out of style and lost out to the fast-paced and more exciting FPS games and more recently the MMOG and MMORPG games that the younger (and sometimes older) crowd loves. And don't get me wrong, at 37 years old, I love the FPS games as well, but the market has become saturated with them and while there are some very nice ones, there are also some pretty crappy ones. It all started with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom (iD software) and in my heart, those two guys paved the way for all these FPS clones. Many of the latest generation FPS games blow away the best of iD's games (Quake 3/4, Doom 4, etc), but they are the true fathers of the genre as we know it today.
I also love to play FSX and even have the rudder pedals and yoke. My dad is a private pilot and he has let me take the controls at
uncritical moments (i.e., I've never taken off or landed in real life). It's fun, but realistically I doubt I will ever get a license to fly so I enjoy flying on the computer.
And as for the MMOG or MMORPG games.... I simply do not have the time and in all honesty I am afraid to even try one because I fear that I'd get hooked and again, I just don't have the time for it!
