I commonly hear that if e-cig usage is allowed to grow at its present rate, within 20 years only 5% of recreational nicotine users will be smoking tobacco to get it. I hope that comes true, and—for the sake of discussion—let us assume that it does ... if we assume that the typical age for a smoker to convert to e-cigs is 20, and if we further assume that vapers live, on average, to age 80, then vaping itself will die out in about 80 years, for lack of enough smokers to convert to make the industry viable.

Since I'll be gone to my reward long before then, I'm just vapin' away, enjoyin' the day.

Of course, in 80 years time recreational nicotine itself may become irrelevant in favor of something new ... as DuPont used to say, "Better things, for better living, through chemistry".

Although I can't say that I've never smoked, I smoked from my mid teens to early 20's. I also smoked cigars for about a year about 38yo. For all practical purposes, I considered myself a nonsmoker and still do.

I'm now over 50 and picked up vaping about 10mo ago and am fully enjoying it. I am also ADD and a prime candidate for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. For all of these, nicotine has benefits.

I also routinely tear up my fingernails and snack.

This is not sarcasm, nor am I mocking anybody, this is part of the hand life dealt me. I'm just glad that I can enjoy the medicinal, behavioral, and social benefits of smoking without screwing up my health even more.

I didn't happen onto vaping the same way most do, but I'm happy to call myself a Vaper.

You are the perfect candidate to be a vaper.

Welcome!

I look around these forums and I see a bunch of people having fun. People enjoying making their own coils. People trying to perfect their DIY liquid. People sampling every vendor under the sun to find the perfect flavor. People blinging up their gear.

This is a fun hobby. I see no reason why someone should only be allowed to participate if they've spent a certain amount of time killing their lungs first.

I also have friends who do smoke, and have tried the nic free gas station cigalikes, and they do nothing for them. With making vaping a hobby, I can help them find better gear and possibly end up quitting instead of thinking vaporizers are useless garbage. Now it's "merry Christmas; here's a tracking number for that Evod vv bcc I mentioned, come over when it arrives and we'll find you a juice"

It is enjoyable. It is helpful. It is interesting. It is social. It's also costly - but less so than video games, the last feed for my addictive personality. It's far healthier than snacking. I can do it while driving - which I do for many hours a day.

I have no regrets about vaping - I feel that the assumed risks are negligible, and the enjoyment that comes from it is well worth the cost. I've already had one conversation about it today with a guy who's planning to quit for new year's, and didn't have a strategy.

I've been off cigarettes for 4-5 years, never really smoked that much, maybe 8-10 a day. I still have the occasional cigar, maybe 1-2 a month. I started vaping when weight started getting out of control and my blood sugar got high. I really started craving analogs and didn't want to go down that road again. Since I've started the e-cigs, my weight has dropped, my blood sugar and blood pressure have also dropped. Most likely this is from the vapor keeping me from the junk food and candy dish. I don't advocate this as a weight loss program, but if keeps me from the junk calories so be it.

Yes Spice,
I do not see the "benefits" in it for those not fighting the "analog monkey on their back".

I am having a hard time with understanding why you would start vaping, just because......

Then I saw a TV commercial from .... (Big T),
and D*** if it did not look like the "Cool Ads" from M**....GH 50 years ago.
Be Cool, Be part of the In Crowd, Be part of the Hollywood movers and shakers....

Great fodder for the FDA, NIH, ANTZ, CDC, Obama Care.........

D***, Santa I have been good, please fill my "Wish List"

Not wanting to shut down the OP,......but there have to be other things you can do with your spare time.....

It's a hobby. Just like fantasy football. Or model trains.

Why do so many people on this forum fuss around with sub-ohming and spend so much money on mods and gear? You don't need to know how to make your own coils to kick analogs. You don't need the perfect coffee e-liquid to quit smoking. And you certainly don't need 3 Provaris or 12 IBTs to stay off cigs. But people do it because it's fun.

It's a lot of fun, and seeing people do it makes people ask, and then more people get into it, and more people quit. I just got a guy come for a smoke break, got chatting, he tried my ego, loved the dekang Cola, and is ordering an evod kit after work. How is it at all harmful to the community that I'm vaping after never having smoked? It's certainly not harmful to me.

The only thing "harmful to the community" is that it feeds into the lies being told by the ANTZ crowd.

In a perfect world, we would reject this kind of fear, as truth and science would win the day.
This is not a perfect world though. In fact, far from it.

Truth and science says that anyone who wants to should vape.
With or without nicotine.

The reality is that we are fighting against liars who are driven by money.
Embracing the "real" truth is the right thing to do, but at times it can put us squarely in their sights.

Ah yes, what to do..........

As a follow up, since I can only vape in the designated smoking area at work, I get questions all the time and have been privileged to give them the information and encouragement they are looking for to convert to vaping. I am proud to say that I have also converrted my brother in law who has smoked pretty heavy for decades. His efforts to quit never lasted more than a day. He's now sitting at about 2 weeks tobacco free.

I'm a former smoker who quit on April 10, 2000 at 3:30AM. Haven't smoked a cigarette since.

A couple of my friends vape and when I learned a little bit about it I realized this was everything I loved about smoking with none of the things I didn't - PLUS, it tastes great! I have always struggled with my weight (and at 5'2" and 43 years old it's pretty easy to pack it on). When I would hear people saying "Oh, it's like vaping apple pie!" or "Oh, this chocolate is rad!" I was intrigued. I love food, and I have a massive sweet tooth. I often suffer from the "body's not hungry but mouth wants it" syndrome. I often wished there was a way to just taste the food without the calories.

I started vaping to see if it would cure the "I'm bored and oh look! A chocolate covered pretzel!" thing. I've lost weight before - several years ago I lost 70 pounds, then gained back 40, then lost 20, then gained back 30, etc. etc. In each case, for me, to lose weight it takes an enormous effort to make sure I'm tracking everything I eat, sometimes weighing portions, way too much time at the gym, a constant feeling of deprivation, and basically a level of focus that is really hard to maintain in the long run. I've done Weight Watchers, paleo/primal, smaller portions, etc. It can be really physically and emotionally exhausting sometimes especially when trying to juggle a career and family and household at the same time.

Since I started to vape several weeks ago, I've lost 10 pounds. I am still eating; I'm hardly anorexic (this afternoon I had sour cream enchiladas and a salad, then sliders and chips for dinner). The difference is that I am no longer snacking or overeating at meals and I'm no longer prone to eating things just for the taste instead of hunger. I started out at 0mg, but have moved to 6mg because it also seems to help with ADD. I'm not sure how much of an appetite suppressant that low of a nic level is. The sweet tooth is satisfied and the chocolate covered pretzels on the counter are still sitting there weeks later. There's no effort, all of the focus is on something I'm really enjoying, and there's no emotional component because there's no deprivation. There's just the pleasure of seeing the extra pounds come off a bit at a time because I'm not consuming all of those extra calories even though I'm totally satisfied.

So that's why this vaper started, and will continue. At some point I will probably plateau and start eating a little healthier, but for now I'm just coasting along. Vaping for me is very satisfying since I was a pack a day smoker from when I was 13 til I was almost 30. The action feels very familiar (I was French inhaling on my first vape) but there's none of the things I hated about smoking tobacco.

Thanks if you read this far. Only bad thing? I need to buy new pants!

I'll be honest I only read the 1st post, so,I'm not sure what has been said and I will, probably repeat it. If you did not previously smoke there is no reason to start vaping even at 0 Nicotine. There is no benefit to you and nothing that you stand to gain from it. Don't do it.

Don't do it your 50 year old self will come back and kick your ... for it. Don't do it. It's not cool, it's not fun. Don't do it

I was an occasional cigarette smoker. It was just a cig here and there on a rough day, or while in a socialized situation. I picked up vaping recently and find it to be pretty relaxing. I started with 0 nic but it was no different than breathing air, haha. Tried 6mg and liked that a lot better, so now I just vape while commuting, or while reading a book. :)

Some day, people like you will be what makes vaping acceptable and mainstream.
I'm glad you found this hobby/habit/lifestyle and that it is helping you in so many ways.

I am one.

I smoked occasionally (like before a gig with my band) but never anything close to habitual.

I started vaping because I don't like the heavy throat hits and cigs seemed like a lot of nasty side effects just for a temporary buzz. I keep the nic levels between 0 and low - like 10mg or less - and I never developed an addiction to cigs even when I would smoke several days in a row, so I'm not too concerned about getting addicted.

Like the guy above said it just seemed like a better vice to have than snacking on stuff when I really shouldn't be.
