Anybody else refill your carts like this . . .

Why is it not good to "deform" the filler material when you're filling, such as by pushing against it with a paperclip or whatever? I always do kind of push it away from the inside of the cartridge with the paperclip, when I've tried that. Is this causing it to be less efficient? kathy

Hi Kathy,

I found that after I put that little straw down into the side edge of the cart, I didn't have to touch the filling with anything at all, all day long. At the end of the day, it looked just about as fresh as it did at the beginning of the day. It wasn't squished up at all, and since I wasn't messing with the filling with a paper clip (to try and squeeze out air bubbles or drip juice down the side), the bit of glue that they put at the bottom and the side all held up, so that the filling was still distributed throughout the cart, and not at all compacted. It worked as well at the end of the day as it did when I put a fresh one in that morning, and it was nice that I didn't have to top it off as often, since I could get more juice in there.

As you know, the first drop that you put in a fresh cart sits on the top for a couple of seconds, and then it soaks down. I cut the hollow cotton swab "straw" so that it went right to the bottom of the cart (I did use a paper clip to push the dry filling away from the edge, so I could get the straw down into the corner), and was about 1/16" below the top edge of the cart. That ended up to be 1" for a blank DSE801 penstyle cart. After that first drop soaked in, I was able to just drip/drop away into the top of the cart, until it soaked from the bottom up to the top. You can see when it's about to start pooling on top, and then stop. For top-offs, just drip away into the top of the cart again.

My personal vaporizer - or whatever you want to call them - worked better than it ever had, and I was able to put more juice into it, and since the straw allows the air to escape from the bottom up, there are no air bubbles in the filling. I never had nic-juice in my mouth all day either. I did still use a tissue to wipe off the outside of the cart whenever I re-filled it; but I wasn't using tissues and paper towels, and having to wash the juice off of my fingers every time. And the other plus for me, was not having to use a syringe ... I poked myself one day when I had a syringe in my hand (with no cap), and I was trying to pop the top off of a plastic bottle to add a little something to my menthol mix. When the top popped, my hand jerked. Ugh. A straw - whether you use a hollow coffee stirrer, or whatever - is cheaper and more disposable than a syringe, and you don't have to clean it (I'm lazy).

Yep ... if you ask me what time it is, I'll tell you how to build the clock. Try it - you'll like how great it works, too. I moved my straw the next morning to a fresh cart (I start with a fresh cart each morning for the main flavor that I use), and cut enough so I had a straw for each flavor that I use.

Thanks for the tip! Sorry - I don't remember who the original poster was now, but I'm going to go back and look.

I use a needle tip bottle, also known as a precision oiler. I send the needle down the side of the cart, between the wall and the polly. Then I gently squeeze until the top of the polly just begins to glisten. This works particularly well because it fills from the bottom and it doesn't dislodge the polly. Additionally, the end of a needle tip is not sharp like a syringe and because it's a full sized bottle, I don't have to mess with filling the syringe and then filling the cart. One stop filling.

Melinda09's post is right on. The purpose of the straw mod is to allow you to vape almost 2 to 3 times more liquid before requiring a refill. It also will allow you to refill completely just by dripping on the top of the filler material. It's a great idea and I have modified almost half of my carts so far. If I vape as much as I can from a 510 cart, which I almost never do, then I can drip 10 to 12 drops right on top of the filler. Usually I stop when the vaper production drops off slightly and top off. I like to vape a full cart!

I have some blank carts for the 510, I would like try this with the straw mod.

I have been taking the fill out snipping a little bit off the top and then putting it back in with the straw and dropping the liquid on top.....
works really good but I wonder if it could last longer by pouring some
juice in first.

My question is how many drops do you put in the empty cart before putting filler back in? or should I leave good enough alone. ;)

Hi Laura,

Personally, I leave good enough alone, and don't take the filling out at all. It's not necessary, and I think that it all works better with the straw mod-thing if the bit of glue that adheres the filling to the cart remains, so the fill doesn't shift around. I just wiggle a paper clip down a side or corner where there's no adhesive, and push it back (squish it into the center of the cart) enough to allow me to put the straw right down the side of the cart with a tweezers. I don't even cut the bottom of the straw at an angle, like some drawings show ... just cut them with a scissors, and they work fine.

I'm curious though - why do you take the fill out and snip the top off?

Hi Melinda,

Thanks for your response, I pretty much came to the same conclusion about messing with the filling.

I had read here....I think it was Krell from Texas who suggested taking a little bit of the filling off so as to leave some room at the bottom of the cart for better circulation???

It could be that people were talking about making their own filling and adjusting for the straw.

Just a quick note because I'm a huge fan of this refill method:

Don't do it with BestECig BE112 refill carts. They use a glue to hold the material in the cart. The material they use is friggin awesome for dispensing liquid fluidly, but sticks to attys easily. I've just been doing a careful straw mod with these, sliding the clipped coffee stirrer down the side of the cart carefully rather than removing the material and breaking the glue bond.

I'm pretty sure it works like this...

If you don't leave a space in the bottom of the cartridge under the filler then you will have no air pocket. If you have no air pocket you can still make use of the straw mod for refilling your cartridge all the way to the bottom. But if you have no air pocket then you do not enjoy the benefit of the drastically improved wicking and better vaping.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I want to do the straw mod for improved wicking, because I am doing just fine refilling with a syringe or a needle tip dropper bottle, so I don't need it for refilling. I haven't done the straw mod yet, but I think I intend to some day when I get tired of leaving a bunch of juice in my cartridges and having to top them off more frequently than should be necessary.
