I live in a state that recently raised its tobacco product purchasing age to 21. I have smoked cigarettes since I was 15 and switched to juul at 18. I'm now 19 and I feel like a shady criminal trying to get my hands on juul pods and eliquid, almost like I'm buying weed or something. I have somehow managed to squeak past the age verification on a websight but that still feels shady and I really dont like doing it. I almost feel like I had a right taken away from me that I only had for a few months. Anybody else feel this way?

You did have a right taken away. But in terms of law, I suppose that type of thing has been upheld before. Alcohol, for example.

So it sucks to be you. You're baring the burden. In another 5-7 years, it will be well known for all "coming up". Just like it was for you at 15, when you shouldn't have been smoking either.

It was easier to be shady in the old days, we had vending machines around. ;)

I think most people (or a good many here) on this forum are older and so dont have any issues with age..

My son vapes, but he's 35 so likewise unaffected..

I'm not a big proponent of raising the age to 21, as I feel if your seen as old enough and responsible enough to pay taxes, put your life on the line to serve in the armed forces, and vote then your old enough and responsible enough to drink alcohol or "smoke" or vape as the case may be..

I think if they are going to raise the smoking and drinking age then they need to raise the age for all of it..

but that's just my opinion, which is about worthless in the grand scheme of things..

The reasoning behind raising the age is so that Seniors in high school that have hit 18 aren't becoming the school suppliers of all things alcohol and cigarette related..

and statistics show it does decrease the amount of underage drinking and smoking because it more readily cuts off the older brother or older student supplying the younger..

But I digress, for you - now's as good a time as any to just stop.. If I would have stopped smoking when I was younger it would have been a successful quit, I was just too dumb at the time to stop..

You can just quit, and it's easier now than it ever will be in the future..

I have to say I agree with many who have posted before me. I started smoking at 14 yet in those days it was very easy to get cigarettes as I could get them out of vending machines and as I am almost 50 this doesn't effect me.

I think you should be looking to step off your nic level. JUUL has been the issue that has caused the problem to explode like this to be honest. I am sorry that you are caught in the middle of it all but I remeber when they raised the drinking age and thought that sucked too. 50mg is not necessary for ANYONE quitting smoking. The average non filtered cigarette is only 32mg. So every puff is MORE than that and we all know no one takes just one puff. I would really encourage you though, find a way to step down the nic level and hopefully get off. That was how most (90%) of us did it to begin with.

I've been in a similar situation. I was 17 when my province simultaneously cracked down on underage smoking and raised the age for buying cigarettes from 16 to 18. Not having had enough of rescinded rights, I moved to Ontario the next year (at the age of 18) where one had to be 19 to buy both cigarettes and alcohol. Unfortunately ('though I didn't think of it that way at the time) I was able to get around the restrictions, which led to several decades of smoking before I found vaping.

I understand how you feel (have many young friends here in California in the same situation) but I should remind you that underage people are not allowed here on ECF (I'm not qualified to back that up, but it's my understanding of the rules)

OP is 19 - he is fine

Forum Rules

This Website is for the use of persons over the age of eighteen ONLY. Persons under 18 must not use the Website. ECF does not allow persons under 18 to register or participate in any way.

@Topston
I am sorry, you are in a really tough spot.

That really sucks for you. I knew this was going to be a thing when I heard the age limit increase was coming.

When I was 14 I had a full beard and had access to our local factory's uniforms. That factory would have a shift change at the same time I got out of school, and could easily buy packs of smokes mixed into the rush of factory workers. Never got carded this way.

You probably feel shady about doing that because you are in fact breaking the law. That tends to make people feel that way.

I feel the same way you do. If they expect 18 yr olds to go to war for them, pay them taxes, etc, etc. then an 18 yr old is old enough to vote, drink, smoke.....although I'm not condoning it, of course. I wish I never started doing any of those things (including paying taxes:p). I started smoking steadily at 15 and at 19 I quit for 8 full years only to relapse back into it. I was so confident that I would never be a smoker again that I asked someone for a drag of their cigarette one night. Biggest mistake I ever made. But back then we didn't know better. I thought I could get away with it.

How do you all feel about @Topston Trying to use different vape gear with lower nic ejuice. He's obviously in a tough spot because he's been intaking high levels of nicotine. He might go back to analogs. Could he be safely helped through PMs?

I'm sure he could, he'll need/want to cut down his nicotine levels whether he quits vaping or sticks with it anyway..

@Topston the new laws are silly but suspect we are stuck with them for the time being. Have you considered rebuildables and diy juice? Becoming a self sufficient vaper would eliminate some your problems with acquiring juice and wire.

Actually, I thought that when they raised the drinking age in the US they phased it in so it didn't take away any existing rights, but I was 21-22 at the time so maybe I just assumed they would do that.

Well they might, but to go back to the smoking thing and the OP, he started smoking at 15...so even if a gradual or pre-announced raise, it's missing him, even if it was announced 3 years before going into effect.
