Update on the problem. I do run Malwarebytes as well as Glary Utilities. Neither found or solved the problem. I found the culprit when I checked my FF add-ons. I don't have many add-ons so I immediately noticed an add-on that I didn't install. Where it came from, I don't know. I was able to get rid of it and now everything is back to normal. I'm a bit ticked that FF 'allows' unauthorized add-ons to install without user consent.
