That about sums it up. I am sure we all would like to be totally informed on whats going on, but the reality is, if there is ever an outbreak, the information will filled with half truths and misinformation, so what will you be able to believe?
The only thing we can do is try and be as prepared as possible and hope for the best. After watching all that is going on, over in Japan, it shows you just how quick disaster can strike.
Again, as I mentioned in the ZPOTW, I hope everyone gets a disaster bag ready, and fill it with survival items. Matter of fact, think I might start a new thread for links and items you should have in your bag. You just never know when something might happen.

How about getting the sticky'd "Not just Survival... Zombie Survival!!" back on track with the links? I've been debating on demoting it from sticky since it's been dead for some time but I don't really want to.
That will work. I really think a checklist for bag supplies would be helpful in real life and not just on the zombies boards. Maybe its the boy scout in me, but i think everyone needs to be prepared.
I don't know if you have a favorite vendor but Emergency Survival Kits for Car, Office, School and Pets seems to have pretty good prices on their food bars and water boxes but they are a little pricey on some other stuff like suits and masks which can be found for A LOT LESS as mil surplus.
I dont have a favorite vendor at all...I look for bargains where I can. I do try to by a decent quality when it comes to gear, but do not go top dollar. I like to look at the pre-made survival kits to get ideas on what I might add to it.

Water purification pills have an expiration date, the straw does not and is good for 5000 gallons. And for less than $30, thats a deal

Holds 100 gallons. I think they would be great if one had a little notice that things were getting ready to go downhill. Also, being plastic, and lightweight unfilled , you could make hidden water stashes around abandoned neighborhoods. Fits right in a bathtub.

I seen those before. Always thought they were a great idea, especially coming from the Florida area and having hurricanes, where you have time to really plan before the hurricane hits. I wonder how strong the bag is? would it fit in the back of a truck without rupturing? having 2-300 gallons of filtered water would last you a while if you had to high tail it to the mountains in your truck.
I bought 2 of their 5 gallon plastic water bladders last year to take to a music fest. They worked like a charm. The carry handle on top never gave out. Plus, I would lay one on top of my truck for the day so it would get nice and warm in the sun. Then take a quick shower in the evening. I think they were 10 bucks a piece. Wouldn't be the best thing to carry very far. But for squeezing into the back of a over packed pickup bed, it was perfect.
Yes. The calendar is very disappointing lately, so I may start supplementing with items from a book I found in my son's room "Worst Case Scenario"...It's got lots of little serious/humorous tidbits.
Re: preparedness...I actually got a Go Bag prepared, and made my own MRE type meals last weekend. The hubby has always thought it was silly...but after watching all the Japanese people standing around with NOTHING but the clothes on their back got him snapped into shape! He helped me shop and now our basement shelves are loaded with emergency food & water and we have bags packed & ready to roll if necessary.
We've had lots of earthquakes, and I made it through the eruption of Mt St Helens- but fortunately have never had to flee my home. I feel so awful for those people in Japan.
Just about any plastic 'bag' would have a chance of rupturing or more likely getting poked and leaking, it's only 10mil thick so it'd have to be supported on the sides. Now if you had an empty lock box that spanned the width of the truck bed, you'd be in business. Well, as long as the truck held out that is. It would be a lot cheaper than buying a truck bed water tank though. I also like the idea of having several stashed in various locations but it only keeps the water 'good' for a month, so I'd still pack extra purifier pills.

Mutt that's a very NICE bag!! I picked up an "Alice" bag at the surplus store for $6.99. It's a big sqare backpacky thing with pockets, and I was able to pick thru the bin to find one in "new" condition. Big enuf to carry alot, small enuf for me to haul.I'm also looking for a duffle to carry the MRE's and weapons...
I bought mine last fall before hunting season and the price was half of the listed price that i posted. I need to find a surplus store around here.

That style pack is near and dear to me. You can't beat a good'ol ALICE pack. If you Willie Peter(water proof lol) your gear, it makes a good floatation device as well.
Mutt, I've seen paracord on lots of emergency prep lists. At the risk of sounding stupid...would you please tell me what it's purpose is? I assumed it's for tarps, shelters & generally tying things down, but that seems too simple...

the easiest way to know about paracord: 550 Paracord
if you glance at the link, you will see that each cord is actually made up of 14 cords wrapped by a sheathing. So in theory, a 100' piece of paracord would actually contain 1500 feet of usable cordage- 14x100 + 100(sheathing). Each individual strand is rated at 17.5 pounds tensile strength and the outer sheathing is rated for 300 pounds.

there are also lots of different sites that you can either buy key rings, bracelets, zipper pulls etc made from paracord or learn to weave your own and you can always have a length of cord with you.
