multiple sclerosis of the liver is very rare.... furthermore i love drinking in the morning, it definitely helps set the tone of an afternoon nap.But thats just me and like they say you have to find your "sweet spot" of drinking, or is that vaping? i'm not sure anymore...but i love to vape and drink. as much as possible.

Unfortunately, no amount of brushing and flossing and rinsing will remove the alcohol from your breath. Until it's processed it's in your blood, and hence your lungs. This is why alcoholics carry and always use breath mints, it's not to get rid of the initial drink smell, it's to cover up the constant smell on their breath as they are metabolising the alcohol.

It will be noticed eventually, there's no way around it short of popping mints like it's going out of style, which will also be noticed eventually.

I'm not saying not to have that beer in the shower, or to stop drinking, or anything of the sort. You're an adult and can do what you want. I'm just pointing out that just because you don't smell it doesn't mean nobody else does. It's a touchy subject, and often employers will overlook it if you are still performing your duties as required.

My main concern is right in the topic title ("Drinks a lot" implies more than just one in the morning) and that usually (Not saying you) a beer in the morning is followed with more throughout the day to keep the edge off. Again, you can do as you wish, I'm sure you have it under control. Just make sure to keep it that way, addiction is one of those things that can creep up on you without even realizing it. Most of us here are ex-smokers and can relate.

I am definitely a functional alcoholic but I dislike coffee. If I wanted a rush and a dry mouth I probably would have tried harder stuff. I work in restaurants and only drink coffee if it is free. I get a short burst of energy and then come down with a mopy, dry mouth when I'm coming down. Not for me. A beer in the morning may be scary to some but it has started alot of days for me. I would rather have one in the shower and go to work then have 4 cups of coffee and want a 5th to keep me high. Appreciate the input.
That is an Oxymoron. Functional Alcoholic.

This I don't agree with.

Many Alcoholics never get a DUI. Or Lose their Job or Lose all their Friends and Family. Some are Highly Functional and never Reach the Bottom of the Bottom.

This in no way means that "They are Powerless over Alcohol and Their Lives have become Unmanageable." may not be true.

I know Many Alcoholics who have sought Help not because they got a DUI or Lost their Job, but because they wanted to be Free of Having to Drink Every Day just to Maintain a Level of Stability. Also because they were Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired.

to further elaborate. Just means you have not gotten caught DUI YET and have not lost a job YET and have not lost enough friends, family or other things YET.

BTW - "Yet" is a Terrible term to use. Because it can Apply to Everything. You're not Divorced... YET. You aren’t a Wife Beater... YET. You're not a _________... YET.

Your attitude towards the genuine and heart felt care that you have received here on the forums disgusts me. Keep drinking buddy! I'm sure the loved ones around you are proud.

People deal with things in there own way. The guy just had 30 people tell him they think he's an alcoholic. How he reacts is how he reacts. So you just turn on him. Your snide nasty comment disgusts me.

I don't know of a medical professional who would diagnose so much as a hangnail over the internet, let alone a serious condition such as alcoholism. And in that vein, I've seen a number of posts in other threads where poster after poster has asserted their unwillingness to pronounce on any number of possibly-smoking-related symptoms as described by a given OP. But one guy says he likes a beer of a morning while showering and boom! diagnoses abound.

Personally, I think his response has been a model of self-restraint and good humour.

I have to say, some of the responses on this thread really rub me the wrong way. The OP asked a question, as many of us do. He just wanted an answer, not to be judged. I haven't counted, but I would guess at least a quarter of the responses were along the lines of "you have a problem" with a few "don't be so ungrateful"s thrown in.

As indicated by the original post, he quit his job due to stress/unhappiness, and the negative responses probably aren't helping. I think it took a lot of courage to post the question, and if I got the responses he did, I'd probably delete my account. I'd like to reiterate, the habit stated is one beer in the shower, and "alot" in the subject. A lot is subjective, of course.

I drink a fair amount myself, yet I am still a functional alcoholic, in the sense that I have a loving relationship, never drive drunk, and am always fantastic at my job. I'll probably get help if needed at some point since it's not healthy, but in the meantime, I already know if I'll have to do that without being told by members of this forum.

We ALL have a problem - that's why we're here. Don't call the kettle black, OK?

PS. When are they going to come out with E-Beer? :)

Sometimes, there is a Fine Line between wanting to Help a Person and Sticking your Nose in their Business. Just like there is a Difference between Genuine Concern and Engaging in Schadenfreude.

I see the Replies in this thread as more falling into the First of Both of these Categories.

If a Person Posts that they are Unemployed and is Drinking in the Mourning, and then later Posts are a probably a "functioning alcoholic", I am going to error on the side of Sticking my Nose in Their Business and tell them that this could be a Huge Warning Sign of a Problem.

If I cross a line and Piss them Off, Boo Hoo Hoo. That's what the Ignore List is for on a Forum. My only hope is that a Person, Any Person, will read what I have to say and Think About It.

It's like that scene in the beginning of "The Matrix" when Trinity tells Neo to get into the car because he [Neo] knows what is down that Road, and that he [Neo] doesn't want to go down it.
