Thank you, Marina. It was an honor to serve.Awww... Look at all our fine military in here. Thanks to all of you for your service to our fine country. Hope you all have an awesome Veteran's Day and it carries on throughout your lives!
I learned a lot in the Navy, like...how to out drink all the guys, beat them at pool, and how to back a UPS truck in a hangar between helicopters 8' apartThank you, Marina. It was an honor to serve.
Lmaoooo....combat medic/cardiac specialist, but spent most of my time in Korea working newborn nursery.I learned a lot in the Navy, like...how to out drink all the guys, beat them at pool, and how to back a UPS truck in a hangar between helicopters 8' apart
I also learned not to drive my supply truck down the flight line when F-18's were getting ready for take off, lost a cover that way.
I worked in a civilian office when I first got to NAS Belle Chasse, it was ok, but not what I wanted to do. So I asked my G11 supervisor if I could transfer somewhere else, cause answering the phone was not what I joined the Navy for. They needed someone in supply, I volunteered lol. So I was the base UPS person, delivering parts to all the squadrons![]()
Yes, there are a lot of my uncles also ...no women served - hats off to your family and your poor dad being POW. I only knew one person who was a pow and he wouldn't talk much about it either. I also wish my dad had told me more ... Right after he died "saving private Ryan " came out and my dad was a medic ..so after seeing the movie, I realized I would never know everything he went through...he was in IWO and had a negative that his buddy sent him after the war .and used to love making pictures made and framed to those who served. My grandmother did save the letters he wrote during the war but they are only snippets. My grandfather, dad, 4 uncles, great aunt, my brother and I are all vets. They say that the reason kids get car sick is that they can't see well out of the window. It has something to do with equilibrium. Once they get older and can see where they are in relation to space and time (since they got bigger and can see where they're going) it goes away. It makes a lot of sense because I still get car sick if I try to read a book while on trips. Put the book down and look around and it goes away.
Thank you so much for serving Red....I don't know why I didn't know that. You sure had an interesting life and bet could tell a lot of stories too!MEDCOM-K, 121st Evac Hospital, Seoul, Korea checking in.
Thank you so much for your service. You must have had an interesting life too. I always think that people who serve are pretty darn special!US Navy checking in here. NAS Belle Chasse. Been a long time since I was there.
My grandfather, a British soldier, was part of the Normandy invasion. I still have postcards and letters he wrote to my grandmother and my mother while in the trenches. It really opens your eyes to read them what they went through. He always held much resentment towards Americans after that war and it didn't help much when his only daughter went off and married an American serviceman. He wouldn't even come to America to see us because his greatest fear was to die on American soil.My grandfather, dad, 4 uncles, great aunt, my brother and I are all vets. My great aunt was a MASH nurse in Korea, and I never knew that until I was there and my mom told me. My father didn't speak at all about being a POW, I never knew until my grandmother told me when I was a teenager. My father sent lots of letters home to his family in NY, and we didnt know if any of it was saved. My sister (who I haven't spoken to in years) recently called to tell me that SHE had all of it, after our aunt in NY passed away she got all of it. Of course, she couldn't have been bothered to tell me when my aunt passed, just that she had all of his things. Months pass, and today she "finally had time" to scan me one photo of my dad, in uniform, that she sent for Veterans Day.Yes, there are a lot of my uncles also ...no women served - hats off to your family and your poor dad being POW. That's awful! My dad was based in Britian before Normandy. He did speak fondly of the Brits, wasn't very fond of the Germans, though...lol...and no, I'm not as old as this makes me sound! Oh gosh, you really need to have those letters to read. What can you do get her to scan them?
