I learned a lot in the Navy, like...how to out drink all the guys, beat them at pool, and how to back a UPS truck in a hangar between helicopters 8' apart ;)
I also learned not to drive my supply truck down the flight line when F-18's were getting ready for take off, lost a cover that way.
I worked in a civilian office when I first got to NAS Belle Chasse, it was ok, but not what I wanted to do. So I asked my G11 supervisor if I could transfer somewhere else, cause answering the phone was not what I joined the Navy for. They needed someone in supply, I volunteered lol. So I was the base UPS person, delivering parts to all the squadrons :)

I don't have much military family. My Dad was in the USAF, stationed in Britain when he met my mother. I met my husband in Ft. Stewart, GA where his mom and dad (US Army Maj., retired) lived and my brother-in-law who was in the Army and a Vietnam Vet.

I bet you guys have wonderful, scary, inspiring and funny stories you can tell of your time in service.

Yes, there are a lot of my uncles also ...no women served - hats off to your family and your poor dad being POW. I only knew one person who was a pow and he wouldn't talk much about it either. I also wish my dad had told me more ... Right after he died "saving private Ryan " came out and my dad was a medic ..so after seeing the movie, I realized I would never know everything he went through...he was in IWO and had a negative that his buddy sent him after the war .and used to love making pictures made and framed to those who served. My grandmother did save the letters he wrote during the war but they are only snippets.

They say that the reason kids get car sick is that they can't see well out of the window. It has something to do with equilibrium. Once they get older and can see where they are in relation to space and time (since they got bigger and can see where they're going :)) it goes away. It makes a lot of sense because I still get car sick if I try to read a book while on trips. Put the book down and look around and it goes away.

You are right ..the older ones are much better but never knew the reason. And the same with this..they cannot read either which really annoys them

My grandfather, a British soldier, was part of the Normandy invasion. I still have postcards and letters he wrote to my grandmother and my mother while in the trenches. It really opens your eyes to read them what they went through. He always held much resentment towards Americans after that war and it didn't help much when his only daughter went off and married an American serviceman. He wouldn't even come to America to see us because his greatest fear was to die on American soil.

My great aunt was a MASH nurse in Korea, and I never knew that until I was there and my mom told me. My father didn't speak at all about being a POW, I never knew until my grandmother told me when I was a teenager. My father sent lots of letters home to his family in NY, and we didnt know if any of it was saved. My sister (who I haven't spoken to in years) recently called to tell me that SHE had all of it, after our aunt in NY passed away she got all of it. Of course, she couldn't have been bothered to tell me when my aunt passed, just that she had all of his things. Months pass, and today she "finally had time" to scan me one photo of my dad, in uniform, that she sent for Veterans Day.

That's awful! My dad was based in Britian before Normandy. He did speak fondly of the Brits, wasn't very fond of the Germans, though...lol...and no, I'm not as old as this makes me sound! My father was well into his 40's when he married my mother.

Oh gosh, you really need to have those letters to read. What can you do get her to scan them? All of them!!
