I'm normally an apple/gadget wh0re, but I'm a little unsure about the ipad. The thought of an ultralight, quick browser with 10 hour battery life appealed to me, but starting at $500 with no flash support? Not a single usb port and no ability to chain it to a chair? Too big to stick in your pocket, too valuable to leave lying around.
The at&t data plan isn't bad, assuming that the death star won't choke under the demand for bandwidth.
This is what intrigues me. I have been toying with the idea of a paperless office for a while, where I start scanning everything onto a networked hard drive instead of having folders filled with documents lying about. The mobility of documents would be a flaw in this plan; to show them to someone without a computer in front of them, I'd either have to keep the originals in files or print them from the drive to transport them.
If I could use a computer to copy folders onto an ipad before I left the office instead of
throwing crammed folders into a briefcase, it could be perfect. If I ran into someone and had to discuss a file I didn't take with me, an assistant could use mobile me or dropbox to transmit that file to me almost instantly.
This could be a way to reach the holy grail of the paperless office, and should be practicable with the capabilities of the ipad unless apple somehow screws it up. I'll probably pass on spending $500 for a consumer toy or gadget, but I'd gladly spend a grand on an indispensable work tool.
