If the members of ECF don’t mind here: I’d like to take off my normal grown up mature hat, and replace it with my childish whining hat so I can get this thing out my system, hope you guys can tolerate me being annoying this one time?

In a discussion on the EU legislation topics, a member of this forum got a reply from a MP which was a good response: but said and I copy paste/quote “I do know people who have found e-cigarettes very helpful in weaning them off the real thing.”

I know what he meant and that’s fine what he meant it was meant very well so I’m not criticizing the guy who said that: but just that one part he said really just rubs me up the wrong way.

“The real thing” I just hate that, to me it makes it sound like vaping is for people who want to pretend to smoke. And it makes it seem ultra lame, again no offence to the nice MP and all but I dislike being called a fake.

Which I don’t think I am, sure I got here because I wanted to not use tobacco anymore but find something somewhat similar which vaping is granted. But vaping and smoking aren't the same thing, and I don’t pretend to smoke cigarettes or pretend anything like that.
I take pride in the fact, that the stuff I blow clouds of is vapour and NOT smoke, I love the fact that we have amazing devices that DON’T pretend to be cigarettes but more like Sonic Screwdrivers from Dr Who.

Am I alone here?

*takes of whining childish hat and replaces it with grown up one again*

Ok right back to proper mature attitude :)

I see where you're coming from Alvins3ville, but I would let it go. IMO this MP is 'getting it' which I consider a good thing. I really doubt he meant anything disrespectful by it and I would not take it that way. That's my $0.02 ;)

It seems petty to me to be offended by his wording. Some people substitute 'the real thing' for analogues which to me sounds totally stupid.

You will read this 20 million billion gazillion times on any e cig forum 'I like the act of smoking but don't want to smoke so I vape instead'.

So it IS fake smoking. We inhale nicotine. It is a much healthier alternative to smoking. People are really obsessive in their need to disassociate vaping from smoking in all aspects because they are proud they have kicked cigs and rightly so but if e cigs were devices where you did not draw in the nicotine and exhale big clouds of smoke and the process was instead achieved by let's say inhaling nicotine but we saw no fake 'smoke' trust me NOBODY would use them.

I probably am a "fake smoker". I don't consider myself a non-smoker.

I still say I am going to "grab my smoke", meaning my ecig, or going to "have a smoke", meaning vaping (a word that I don't think existed before ecigs).

It's probably just me, but vape and vaping seem so....how do I put this.......uh, feminine?

OK, so I am a fake smoker. There, I have outed myself.

I was a vegetarian for a long time, and you had the same thing. People would complain about fake bacon being called fake bacon. Others would be a little taken aback. Sorry, if it's meant to taste like bacon, it's fake bacon.

The most ridiculous thing I ever heard was someone arguing that vegetarian sausages shouldn't be sausage shaped, because it's wrong trying to imitate meat sausages, which are obviously evil in every way. I don't know if they ever got around to suggesting another shape, or launching an accompanying line of bread products.

Vaping is functionally the analogue of smoking. It's fake smoking, there ain't nuttin' you can do about it...

It is like saying we are using e-cigs and we can't change that either.

Since vapor looks like smoke people who don't vape are going to call it smoke or fake smoke.I rather hear them use the latter as a description. I will correct them by saying it is vapor, but not be mad about it. :)

All you guys are right: people can call it what they like who cares?

We know what it is: and what’s in a name? a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.

E-cigarettes are fake cigarettes in the same way that automobiles are fake horse wagons, or that computers are fake typewriters.

People both inside and outside of our little culture here have it wrong when they try to discern or impose a fundamental rift between smoking and vaping. They are both the same activity, in principle. Vaping is just newer and orders of magnitude safer. It's smoking evolved. We should embrace that, not run from it; after all, our little habit renders tobacco cigarettes obsolete.

The world just doesn't realize it yet.

Interesting examples. Note that 'computer' used to be a job description, and cars were called 'horseless carriages'.

They developed at the margins, then displaced the original thing, because they were functionally better. Not because their users insisted on inventing new sanitised words for them.

Yeh, well I didn't vape for a long time because, as I said: "It couldn't possibly be like the real thing. Those are just cigarettes for wimps." Then I took a puff of my son's ecig. When I got through coughing and sputtering, I wiped my eyes and said: "WOW!" Got myself a setup the next week.

I was in the VA Hospital smoking area last week vaping away and heard a Marine vet say the same thing I had rather loudly in my direction. My eyes turned upward to see if my horns were showing as I approached him with my setup knowing his "code of conduct" and how rude it would be to turn down the kind generosity of a 70-year-old lady. Yup... when he got through coughing and sputtering he thanked me saying that would teach him and we had a good laugh.

I do vape a very strong TH tobacco flavor but "the real thing?".... nah... its better.

Given that what people would call "real thing" is a cancer stick, I wouldn't mind.

I don't see it as "fake", it is another alternative to getting nic or simply relax (0 nic vapers? :p) It's a whole different world from analogs. It has grown into its own community and the market has expanded with new products coming up all the time.

Vaping IS the real thing, because vaping is its own thing. :D
