From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, search Tonsillolith
A tonsillolith lodged in the tonsillar crypt
ICD-10 J35.8

Tonsilloliths, also known as tonsil stones, are clusters of calcified material that form in the crevices of the tonsils.[1] While they occur most commonly in the palatine tonsils, they may also occur in the lingual tonsils.[1] Tonsilloliths have been recorded weighing from 300 mg to 42 g.[1] They are composed mostly of calcium, but may contain other minerals such as phosphorus and magnesium, as well as ammonia and carbonate.[1]

Protruding tonsilloliths may feel like foreign objects lodged in the tonsil crypt. They may be a nuisance and difficult to remove, but are usually not harmful. They are a cause of halitosis (bad breath).[2][3]

While true tonsillar stones are rare, small areas of calcification or concretions are relatively common.

What exactly is that? I've had alot of tonsil problems. Mine are all rotted from when I was kid and sometimes they form something hard that looks like gravel which I wind up later coughing up. I've never been told what that was though. Wonder if it's the same thing?

Is it a white thing in the back of his throat int the tonsil? I get them every now and then. I find I get them when I dont keep up my hygiene aka brushing teeth. How old is he? Is he old enough to gargle with warm salt water? Not sure how that would feel in the strep throat though. Motrin, warm tea, more water to keep him hydrated. Hope he feels better.

I would try the warm salt water gargle that helps with sore throats for sure and may help with the stone. If he's very young just don't make the salt as strong as you would for yourself.

Does he have the runny nose thing going on with his alergies? If so, a saline nasal spray may help.

Star - they are also called tonsilliths, and Are sort of common ... kids with big "pockets" in their tonsils can get them, and they cause stinky breath!
Sometimes, you can take a Q-tips, and gently push next to it, and it will pop out.
How big is it?

Oh, see, calsax found it! LOL Used to see them in the ER, Moms would see them and freak.

well it's hard to say exactly how big it is as the doctor said it goes back into his tonsil too but it looks like a quarter section of a dime maybe a little smaller from the view i have the doctor said it was "largish" his word not mine lol but he said not to try and dislodge it because it could damage his tonsil possibly :/ plus i don't think my son would let me get near him to do it lol he freaks out when i have to pull a splinter out

Star - "largish"? LOL Good, definitive medical term.
I have done it on a couple of older kids, and lots of adults, but probably not best on little ones. Plus, like the Dr said, they can be sort of in a "cave" and you can't see all of what's behind door #2 ....

DD has had a couple because she has tonsils the size of NY.
