I've only gone into two pharmacies so far looking for PG and both times I got pharmacist that looked at me kind of funny when I asked, "Do you know where I could find something called propylene glycol?" and both times I was asked, "What are you planning on doing with it?"

I chickened out.
No comeback like, "why is it a controlled substance?" or "does it matter?"

I just said, "I'm not sure. I was just asked to try and pick some up if you had any."

Sooo? What's their deal? Maybe they were just trying to be helpful and offer something else if they new what I wanted it for. I didn't really want to tell him, "Well duh! I'm gonna smoke it! What do you do with it?"

I noticed plenty of ppl posting links to order it online. I'm just looking for something more convenient.

btw - I did find some 100% VG at the second pharmacy. It's called De La Cruz Glycerin.
DLC Laboratories: Glycerin and this stuff is thick. Great Clouds of VAPOR, Batman! but I didn't really care for the taste or throat hit.

Moved post to DIY... more appropriate place.

And in reply, as a DIYer... what's more convenient, driving around looking for someplace to buy it (while not embarrasing yourself) or buying it online and having it in a couple of days? It could be on it's way to you now! Or even in your hands! Not to mention that you can buy it much cheaper online.

ditto here. The shop owner lectured me for 5 minutes, while all the other clerks listened in, on how to quit smoking and he could not sell me the VG because he had no idea what combustion does, and you certainly don't want to inhale it and blah blah blah!!!!

It is the same in the hardware store.....no matter what the project...."well what do ya want it for......whatcha doin?" And they always have a comment, judgement, or 'know it all' stance.

I totally forgot......NEVER say what you are doing.

yes....I came home, and ordered online.

I get mine at Tractor Supply Company Tractor Supply Company - Home a gallon is $24. It's on the shelf next to the medicine fridge. Check out the website there is a store locator at the top left of the screen for those who aren't frequent consumers of tractors and tack. You can find it cheaper online but after shipping it's probably a wash.

Perhaps Walrus or someone else who has bought it by the gallon can give you an indication on the shipping costs. You might come out cheaper by a few bucks online.

I bought a gallon from Generic - Propylene Glycol #338-230-Z

It was $22.99, and like $6.95 for UPS ground shipping. I got it in like 3 days.

Tell them you make your own lubricant.

LOL!!!
The only problem is while it may feel slippery, it will dry out your hands...

I totally forgot......NEVER say what you are doing.....

When I was searching for my Fluval, I had such a lost look on my face, I was asked what I was going to use it for.
Too embarrassed to actually say it, I just said it was for a craft project.

Guess I wasn't too far from the truth - it was a project, after all! LOL

Thanks, it looks like if you have a Tractor Supply or Feed Store close to you then buying local by the Gallon is the way to go if you can get it for under $30.

Don't forget sales tax and gasoline for local purchases! My nearest Tractor Supply is about 30 miles away. It just wasn't worth a dollar or two difference to drive out there :)

I told the owner of the pharmacy that it was to make custom vaporizer fluid with EOs. That I hadn't wanted to use VG because I had heard it was too thick to use straight and I didn't want to bother with having to dilute or worry about it gunking up the vaporizer. Basically just yammered on like I knew exactly what I was talking about. May help that I live in the midwest and look like a housewife. She had the pharmacist verify that what I was saying was reasonable and that it wasn't a controlled substance before she would look it up for me. Now I can get it from there no problem. I doubt they would have sold it to me if I had told them that I planned to vape it.

Of note, this was a compound pharmacy, yet they had to order the PG. It wasn't just sitting there for me to purchase, I still had to wait. It came the next day and I didn't have to pay shipping, but if shipping isn't overly high, buying online is simpler. If you're dead set on B&M, I wouldn't bother driving around, I would just call. You will probably have better luck at a compound pharmacy.

We also have a place in town that sells custom candles, shampoos, lotions, etc. They use PG and told my neighbor they could order a gallon for her for $80 something. I said tell them "No Thanks!" I think she called about PG and menthol crystals and said she wanted them for homemade foot cream.

PG and VG are used in so many things and with so many people making homemade personal products it's a bit surprising to me that PG isn't more readily available. That's part of why VG is. You could tell them you want it for homemade shampoo and that's a perfectly reasonable use.
