Well, what you could do is learn a couple of different languages and this would give you a better feel for the aspects of those languages and their capabilities. Since you majored in Language (English) there is a language that was developed by a linguist and so the language is lots different than most languages. Yes, I am referring to the language of Perl --- It has been used in for most any type of application and area out there. It was even used on the human genome project and well as the space craft in outer space --- I like it because I like very cryptic as well as very powerful languages that allow me to do lots of stuff if I so desire --- Lots of languages are fairly restrictive and you can only do just so many things --- but Perl allows you to do lots of things including database work. Lots of folks don't like Perl because it is so cryptic and foreign looking -- I like it because it keeps newbies from understanding my code
Most programming languages allow you to interface with various types of databases and so you can do database programming via most languages out there -- So, if you learn one of those larger languages then you can do database programming as well as other types of programming if you so desire.
