Sometimes for them, too, although possibly for other reasons. I have a friend who is so painfully shy she talks with her hair and hand over her mouth. A guy has to approach her. She sure isn't going to approach him :)

That's too bad and I feel for her because I know what it feels like for sure. I suppose I had a dual problem... I was a bit shy but I was also not interested in what most folks talked about. They certainly were not interested in what I talked about either and I can't blame them I suppose.

Does any of this sound familiar?

More interested in being friends with a teacher than with other kids?

An urgency to talk. Talking a lot and not necessarily expecting an answer from the other person?

Talking about a certain subject with a high level of knowledge even if the other person isn't also well versed in that subject/topic? Very enthusiastic about that topic?

From my experience my brother doesn't pick up on social queues or peoples emotions.

Then after they divorce the jocks and have a couple of kids they look for a nerd type to marry the next time to take care of them and their kids?
Not always of course but I saw it many times.

That was my big mistake. .... I mean first
    wife. Lol

    Who is Oliver Sacks?

He was a neurologist, who wrote fascinating and humanizing studies of folks, mostly with different brain disorders. For example, a man with Tourettes, who was also a surgeon and a pilot. There was something in the way he explored some very extreme and/or unique differences in brain function that gave the commonalities we all share.

Painfully shy, he considered himself an honorary Asperger.

Just checking :). I'll be honest that I don't remember covering much about the autism spectrum in child psychology. Nor do I remember being informed if any of my students were diagnosed. Every year we were provided information regarding students who had certain allergies, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, etc. And if they used certain medications or had unique needs like being allowed to have food or water or being allowed to use the restroom often.

Not surprising...... I have lived almost an entire lifetime before having a label hung on myself..... I have a feeling that there are many more folks out there who went through school without anything being detected.

We were strongly warned not to bring up to parents their child may have autism, ADHD or be using certain substances :( Or have some type of mental condition. It was frustrating trying to drop subtle hints, and the parents didn't understand. I had students I felt strongly needed help, and I couldn't help them get it.

I remember two sisters who pretty obviously had ADD or some focus issue. But, they weren't hyperactive. They were quiet and didn't disrupt class so the parents didn't notice. But, they couldn't concentrate for more than a few seconds so were doing poorly in their classes. A special ed teacher who was team teaching with me thought they had it as well. But, we weren't allowed to tell the parents we thought they should talk to their doctor about it.

That really sucks that they tie the hands of a teacher like that. You sound like you were a very good teacher.

Why is that? It was my son's second grade teacher who first formally suggested testing, which the school district did. Or, are you talking about post-secondary?

@NoFumus I have a question for you: I was wondering if a weird phenomenon I have may be related to Asperger's...... I have noticed that on occasions (especially when I am concentrating) if a noise occurs around me then sometimes I suddenly jump as it startles me.... These noises do not need to be loud either. I don't know maybe this is just a way weird question. I am asking because I never see anyone else do it and so am just curious.

I'm no expert, but being easily startled I think is a common trait in Aspergers, as it is with Tourette's. I'm a bit like that.
