My kiddo was and is like that. He used to get in trouble in school all the time for reading -- trouble as in irritated teachers and bad grades. For example, the class is asked to read a chapter and answer the questions at the ends. Every time, he'd start reading and continue until the class period ended and never turn in a thing. Or, group projects, he just went and found a book.

High intelligence is the only reason I survived. I have no memory skills, social skills are all a painfully learned facade. math is a night mare due to my lack of memory skills. Once I learn the relationships involved I understand math, but I could not learn it by rote as it was taught or attempted to be taught to me. Geometry made sense to me and I liked it. Variables I never really learned till my 20's when I got involved in programming and really understood how they were used.
had to be smart to survive.

I have outstanding ability to put together very divergent inputs and come to a good conclusion. But do not ask me the details of how I do it.
Multiple choice questions work for me because I let my subconscious answer them if I am not too stressed.

Ohh started with all the Scifi, then nature stuff, 1984, technical sciences, never understood poetry though... I actually read about 3/4 of all the books there. Knew the librarian well. And at the library in town as well.
I read very fast, very fast...

See, I think that would make for some very interesting conversations.

Does any of this sound familiar?

More interested in being friends with a teacher than with other kids?

An urgency to talk. Talking a lot and not necessarily expecting an answer from the other person?

Talking about a certain subject with a high level of knowledge even if the other person isn't also well versed in that subject/topic? Very enthusiastic about that topic?

sort of... what I mean is if I am completely comfortable with someone and I happen to be thinking about a topic that interests me than I will talk their ears off.

Most of the time what people notice about me is the length of my letters.... Instead of typing something that should only take a few sentences, I will expound upon it and it may take a page or two? I don't know why I do that? weird I know.

My father was an engineer, and I only recently learned that he was terrible at math. He didn't have a degree, though. He started as a machinist at a small tool & die firm, and as it grew he got promoted. Too bad, that could never happen today.

Nothing is all that weird to me. We all are who we are, and I think that's interesting.

I can totally relate. I have mild autism. Add to that, being a tattooed gay man & I am really one of a kind lol. I'm able to socialize, but only small bits at a time, and it's very difficult to be around strangers for long until I feel comfortable. Smoking has helped with those stressful moments with social anxiety, I haven't vaped yet but so far the vapers I've chatted with have been super nice! Really amazing answering my questions & such. Sometimes to non-autistic people we can probably come off as distant or cold but speaking for myself we just don't know quite how to socialize or initiate conversation sometimes. Bottom is to not judge a book by its cover, sometimes shy people just need a bit of coaxing or encourgement.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s and looming back at how we were taught to treat the gay community. .... makes me sick.
I didn't tease or pick on anybody.
But it took years of contact and various friendships to change my own attitude.
Disgusting. .... why one person would treat another like that is so confusing to me now.
so. Please know I welcome you here .
    With respect and understanding.

None of my peers wanted to talk about it. It did not interest them nor did their interests interest me. The guys wanted fast cars to drive, I learned how cars worked and how to fix them. I liked to play sports and was pretty good but did not fit in so that did not last.

When I was younger I would tend to talk on and on about subjects to people I trusted... But as I got older, I realized that others were not interested in what I had to talk about and so I practiced on not talking so much..... It is the writing of lengthy letters that I am still working on.

I liked your post not because of you're feeling you didn't fit in, but because of your interests.
