AW Protected vs AW IMR

What up Fam,

I recently got my SB with AW 18650 3100 protected batteries. I know that altsmoke says to use protected batteries in the SB, but I also know that the AW IMRs are extremely popular across all types of mods. Are IMRs no longer recommended? Also, is there any difference in vaping experience between an AW protected battery and an AW IMR? Thanks in advance!

I was making a pizza the other day and I noticed a warning "do not eat uncooked". Seriously? I guess they just have to cover their ..., legally speaking. Altsmoke is doing the same. In general, 18650s are pretty safe and the non-protected IMRs are considered a "safe" chemistry battery (some debate). I have used both and don't worry about them. However, these warnings are legitimate if you are stacking batteries for high voltage vaping. This is especially true for the silver bullet; which is not vented.

Having used several 18650s over the course of 3 years vaping (including IMRs), it is my opinion that the 3100 mah are the superior battery. IMR batteries became a popular choice when LR attys made the scene, because IMRs can handle a high current draw. This is an especially good attribute for smaller battery applications (16340 and 14500), but it is unnecessary in 18650s. I've done the math and looked at the spec sheets (which you can find online) and I have found that mathematically and experientially 18650 batteries can easily handle the current draw of LR attys. In this way, the benefit of IMR (high discharge) is mute, and so the high mahs of non-IMR 18650 battery is preferred.
I'm sure that people will dispute this, so I'll speak from experience. The AW protected 3100 mah is hands down the best battery I've every used. An added advantage of this battery is its slow degradation of mah capacity with charging cycles. I have noticed that IMR batteries that I've used drop off considerably over time, so that those nice freshly charged hits go away pretty quickly. The 3100, on the other hand, keeps going, and going, and going. The 3100 are more expensive, but they're worth it and they will last a long time. You made the right choice.
