Ruby, that's a great find. Here's the relevant part for us nicotine addicts:
... nicotine alone progressively inhibited weight gain and significantly lowered the high density lipoprotein cholesterol level and its ratio to the total cholesterol (by 19% and 23% respectively). Also nicotine elevated the low density lipoprotein/high density lipoprotein (LDL/HDL) cholesterol ratio (82%) significantly. On the other hand, royal jelly when given to nicotine treated rats increased the HDL cholesterol and HDL/total cholesterol ratio and decreased the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio...

Bingo! Nicotine is the cause of my cholesterol skew. The problem isn't so much my total cholesterol, but the huge amount of LDL and tiny amount of HDL. That's inviting a stroke! So I'm more than willing to give royal jelly a try, along with the Zocor the doctor hit me with.

Kate: If I don't have a constant level of nicotine in my blood, getting nicotine is all I can think of. I used to get irritable and jumpy, but now I use snus, nasal snuff, Stonewall dissolvable tobacco bits, my pipes and a cigar a day in addition to non-stop e-smoking of my Janty. Note that I do not inhale any tobacco smoke, just puff for the taste and aroma missing with e-vapor.

And, you know, when I first wake up, I really want a cigarette, after 14 months without one. But I won't break.

The restlessness you describe sounds similar to symptoms I once had with an anti-psychotic drug, it gave me an inner restlessness that was very unpleasant. I had to stop that medication, I couldn't find comfort or peace for any length of time with it. Good luck with finding a solution TBob. Staying off cigarettes is a great achievement, especially with daily cravings to deal with, you're an inspiration. Hopefully you will find a balance that you are happy with for nicotine intake and supplements. I think that what you are doing is much safer than smoking and it's good that you are not blind to the possible problems nicotine might cause.

You mention being vulnerable to having a stroke. You probably know this but I'll mention it anyway. Asprin is an anti coagulant, it thins the blood. Apparently for those vulnerable to strokes and blood clots taking half an asprin a day can be preventative of those conditions. Clinicians sometimes prescribe warfarin which does the same thing (warfarin is used as rat killer too, lol).

I've gone the baby aspirin route for a long time, Kate. Unless a person has issues with aspirin side effects, this a safe preventative measure against stroke or heart problems.

I had carotid artery surgery a year and a half ago (95% blocked on right side) and doctors/surgeons blamed my years of smoking. Not exactly. It was nicotine and its vasoconstriction extremes that did the dirty work. When I went off all nicotine, I registered a perfect blood profile; back on nicotine and e-smoking, my profile is badly skewed and I have to go back on expensive meds. Ugh.

I'm definitely acting on Ruby's royal jelly tip. That's backed by a lab study, not some naturalist's idea of a healthy practice. I need science, not notions or lotions or potions.

that's how rat poison works, it makes their blood to thin to be efficient oxygen carrier.
Does tend to make the decaying corpse smell more tho.
Currently there is another rat poison that works the other way, by thickening the blood and clotting it. It also helps lessen the odour of the decomposing corpse .

Just a little useless info from me ;)

and no ...i Don't work for RentOkill ...lol

Royal jelly is now part of my daily routine. I researched what Ruby pointed to -- and was delighted. I really think it should be consumed by all nicotine users -- not just smokers, but all nicotine users .. snus, e-smoking, chewers, snuffers, etc.

I'm due for repeat blood work on Nov. 5, so I'll know more then. I'm certainly not ill. It's just that nicotine is known to wreck cholesterol ratios, and mine were wrecked. Nic lowers good HDL and raises bad LDL. In the end, you get plaque buildup and a stroke. Naturally, the doctor put me on cholesterol-lowering drugs, so I'll have no way of knowning what contributions, if any, royal jelly made to balancing my ratio (and it will be great, I'm sure).

I do have really severe right-shoulder pain, but that apparently has nothing to do with e-smoking, smoking or petting my dog. It just happens as we age.

Small aside with no intent of derailing thread: With bees disappearing in the U.S., beekeepers have to regularly order new queens (I wrote regularly on agriculture matters and beekeeping too). They order new queens from ... China. And China is now taking over the Royal Jelly market, wholesaling to the world.

No way! I make sure my royal jelly is produced in the U.S. What a sad tombstone commentary it would be: Died trying to make himself healthy with products made in China! Royal Jelly gave him the Royal Shaft.

Read the label before you start, Kate.

TropicalBob hope you'll let us know how the bloodwork goes and that you see improvement. I use royal jelly too - just as a nicotine buffer, reckon it can't hurt. :)

Interesting about china doing royal jelly too...8-o

I got mine when I was in Jordan from the desert bee's ;) - I think it's good stuff.

Thank you, Rusty. It is an age thing, to some extent. Young people seemingly smoke with immunity -- it takes lung cancer about 20 years to make itself known. At your age, you've done exactly the right thing by finding a healthier alternative to sucking smoke into your lungs. You have -- most likely -- mitigated a future of COPD, emphysema or lung cancer, all related to carcinogens and mutagens in tobacco smoke.

But you are not protected from nicotine's circulatory impacts. That's why Ruby and I take royal jelly. Check her link for a summary of the research. In lab tests, royal jelly took nicotine users to the levels of no-nicotine users as far as circulatory matters were concerned. You'll care passionately about this in another 20 years!
