Protected batteries have a very small circuit inside of them that shuts them off in the event that they are over-charged, over-discharged, overheated or short-circuited. Because of this, the unprotected batteries are needed in vv mods so they can be used at high voltage. If I remember correctly, the protection is at the peak voltage of 4.2v. VV mods go up to 6.0v.

I wouldn't say that is totally true, I've pushed a protected battery at 6 volts with no issues for hours on end
