Hi all,
I have had my Reo for about a week now and have noticed that I have some dark spots showing on the top of my batteries. I am not sure if it is pitting, but that is my first thought. The batteries were brand new and showed up the same day as the Reo. Is there any way to remove this? I tried isopropyl and an eraser, but it does not seem to be helping. They are flat tops and I have noticed a bit of arcing so I cleaned the positive contact on the mod and applied new noalox to it. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Jordan

I have some of that on a few of my batteries, I was foolish and used them before applying any of the products six mentioned in their post.
I feel the same way. I noaloxed the connections on the mod but not the batteries [emoji20]. A liberal application of noalox has been helping for now. I will have to keep an eye on it if there is no safe way to remove it.

I've read that you can use 1500 grit sandpaper and it will take a little of it off. But then again I have heard some don't recommend this so I am torn whether to try it or not.

don't go too liberal ( a thin coat is ideal) as it's not meant to conduct, only protect from oxidation.

I had some pitting/dark spots issues in the past (old reo contacts). I removed the spots with a dremel polishing wheel and compound.

My coils are usually .6Ω but I have not had any problems with pitting since installing the new sub ohm contacts and I don't put petroleum products on my contacts or my battery. Makes me wonder why some of us have arcing and pitted battery contacts and some don't.

I have a flat top with a dark spot on top also. Only used it in the Reo for a couple of days. I cleaned it with alcohol and most of it came off. My reo has the subohm contacts too. And I'm running about .6ohms. I thought about trying some noalox also. Just didn't know if it would help. Not sure if it goes on the top of the battery on just on the top contact that hits the battery.

You wouldn't by chance be using Sony's, would you?

I never get this with genuine AW IMR button tops. They are all I've ever used and will continue to ever use.

It's important to remember that the REO will function with all types of batteries but the positive contact was specifically designed around the battery I mention above.

Perhaps that's why I've never had and battery / contact issues with my REOs.

It's just my general impression from past posts but I seem to recall more pitting issues with people using flat tops than button tops. I too use the AW IMR batteries and have never had a problem with pitting. I was having a misfire issue with my first REO and was sending it to Robert for the SO upgrade but in preparing it for shipment per Robert's instructions, I realized how terribly bad my routine maintenance(didn't exist) had been so I am confident that was my real problem there. Knock on wood, but I have no pits on any of the batteries I use.

Yes it is pitting from arcing. The higher amp batteries allow for this arc to occur easier than the lower amp batteries. Sony or Xtar are 30 amp batteries and thus the arcing will occur easier than the AW batteries. Sand paper will smooth over the pits, but you pretty much need to use a dielectric barrier such as noalax or deoxit to prevent the arcing on high amp batteries. I posted a video explaining this process in another thread I will find it and add it to this post.

ETA

Watch the whole video to get an understanding of why the batteries arc, it is a physics issue that is used in machining difficult parts.
