Disclaimer: This is based only on personal experience and anecdotal evidence and is intended as a quick guide for people who are just getting in to Personal Vaporizers. The intent is to give potential vaper's some basic info so that they feel confident enough to take that first step that we here all know to be a long term life improving choice.
Note: I'm going to ignore the cigarette sized popular marketed E-Cigs like Blu as my experience with them has been terrible and I have never met a person who quit using just them.
Breakdown- Your vaporizer will consist of 3+ components, you will need at minimum a Battery or Mod, an atomizer, and E-juice.
As this is a guide for beginners I will not go into all the options. I'm going to recommend what worked for me and everyone else I know that successfully made the transition.
To get started you will need 4 things that can be purchased separately or in a starter kit
1) a charger- Any google search can get you to this- What you are looking for is "Ego Charger" alone they run about $4 on average.
2) a Battery- Here is where you need to start making decisions- If you plan on making a full transition you will want 2 if you are more just trying to see if it works you can maybe get away with 1. To decide what kind of battery you need depends on a lot of factors- but it boils down to size=battery life and if you want variable voltage.
Battery life/size- Ego batteries are measured in mAh- from 300-1100- size wise all are about the width of a AA battery (a few CM bigger) the smallest you can get 300-350 mAh are about 2.5in long the biggest maybe about 6.5 in. the tank is going to add about 2.5 in. depending on usage 900 will last you most of a day of high to heavy vaping.
The other big decision you have to make is if you want variable voltage- this allows you to adjust the power going to the coil and gives you more control over your experience- personally I couldn't vape without this but I have found that's because I use dark juice that seems to require more voltage. I know many who just think it's unnecessary- Also note variable voltage (VV) does increase the price.
3) Tanks-This is where is gets muddy- but don't fret. There are lots of options but really only a few important things you need to know- The Tank is what's known as a clearomizer- it consists of a mouth piece- a tube to hold the nicotine juice- a wick- a coil to create the heat necessary to cause vapor- and a connector to get the electricity from the battery to the coil.
Depending on budget and taste you don't have to really make any choices on this right now. I'll lay out some of your options and let you know the pros and cons of each
---CE4 if you get a starter this is probably what comes with it- These are the most basic tanks available-but are basically disposable- they will last you anywhere from a month to about 4 months but once the coil is gone it's trash
---RBA's these are "rebuild-able" a little more pricey but if the coil goes bad you can just replace that, they also generally give a better experience. There are tons of options and each has it's own pros and cons- Really if you want something easy and cheap I would suggest the Kanger T3s or the Evod- one other thing I need to bring up here is "Tank Crackers" some juices have been known to damage tanks so if you want to experiment with those juices you will need a Pyrex tank. Right now the Kanger Protank or Protak 2 seems to be the industry go to. Though more pyrex tanks are becoming available.
4) Juice- Nicotine juice is basically made up of 4 primary ingredients- Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin, Nicotine and Food Grade Flavoring. I really cannot comment too much as these are personal preferences-PG/VG ratio is weird PG is more viscous and normally associates with flavor intensity and "Throat hit" meaning the feeling that your inhaling something not air VG gives an easier burn and more vapor- most folks seem happy at 80/20 65/35 or 50/50. Most vendors don't really give you a choice.
I hope that wasn't too much, I just wanted to lay down the basics, and really just wanted a link I could share.
