I have heard about that as well. No idea how much degradation charging at 1A rather then .5A, but being able to charge a pair in 3 hours or less rather then 4 or 5 hours is worth it.

According to Mooch, charging at 0.5A as opposed to 1A may extend an 18650's life a little, but 1A should really be fine as long as your batteries aren't getting hot. It's 2A charging that will really heat them up and lower their life span.

Any word about the Nitecore D4? I found a place where my 2 options for a 4 slot charger are either the D4 for $40 or the xtar VC4 for $30. I was planning on getting the VC4 based on the price but it seems like the quality is also better from xtar. What am I missing?
The Xtar is definitely the better choice. Just remember that you'll also need to get a good usb wall wart that provides at least 2 amps (many wall warts claim to do so but few actually do).

I do charge at 2 amps fairly often and my batteries are holding up well. In fact, I haven't bought new batteries in over half a year and some of the ones I use must be over two years old. I don't get rid of them before they start showing clear signs of degradation.

Good to know! Any chance the old aspire wall warts or maybe an old Samsung wall wart that came with the phone might work?

I think the Aspires will be max 1A. The Samsung might or might not work. It should have the output written on it somewhere. If you need a new one, I'm getting full speed charging on my VC4 with a Logix wall wart. Anker and Belkin are good brand names - just make sure if you buy a new one that it's 2.4A/12W and not 1A/5W.

As long as it's a 5v 2+ amp wart it should work. The vc4 will work with lower amp warts but won't charge at the full amp capability (it obviously needs 2+ amps to charge at 2x 1 amps or 4x .5 amps).

I`ve been using the Gyrfalcon 44 for a few days now - I like it

Previously I would always try to charge at slightly lower rates (~750) to help prolong the battery life and I was never usually in a rush as I have many batteries.

The Gyrfalcon defaults to 1amp across all 4 channels in Auto mode- which is fine by me.

I don`t like to (and quite frankly refuse to !) press buttons and change settings each time I insert a battery, so the defaults are OK and usable on this unit.

Plenty of finger room to get the batteries out and an adequate display, plus blue/red leds for each bay indicating charging or complete, even if the main display has turned itself off.

It has replaced a Liitokala 400, Luc v4 and a Nitecore D4.

(I noticed the supplied UK charger was an Efest one - maybe added by the UK vendor ?)

I too recently purchased a Gyrfalcon All-44 and I love it. It charges twice as fast as my old Nitecore i2 plus I have the advantage of having a 4 bay charger now. I am loving it. I also like that it displays the current voltage as it charges. My only gripe is that the display goes dark after a few minutes so I have to "wake" it up in order to read the display. A minor con.

Xtar chargers are the best for the price in my opinion and for what they do. I have a SP2 and it a great charger. It's a two battery and fits up to a 26650 and does Nicad and liion. Also it can charge at .5, 1, or 2 amps. I'm waiting on a new charger from fasttech now. It's the Litokala lii 500 and so the answer to the question "which is the best 4 battery charger" it's the Liitokala engineer Lii 500. It does analysis and charging, is quiet as a church mouse(no loud fan like the opus) and charges using cc/cv unlike the inferior pulse charging the comparable opus charger uses. Also it costs $25 if your willing to wait for the Chinese mail to get it here.

I have the Efest LUC4, Xtar VC4, and the Nitecore i4. The only one of those three that will charge 4 18650's at 1A simultaneously is the Efest LUC4.

Nowadays, I use the Nitecore mostly for charging Ni-Cads and they get warmer than I like. The Xtar VC4 charges them faster and with only minimal warmth. Go figure.

The LUC4 is a powerhouse for charging 4 18650's at once at 1A (of the three chargers I mentioned).

The Xtar has the best information display. If I were buying again, I'd buy the Xtar VP4. The VP4's form factor is very much like the Efest LUC4 and it charges 4 18650's at once very quickly (2 hours or less). The LUC4 has bar graph charging progress displays and the VP4 has numeric voltage displays.

I use the Xtar VC4 with an Anker 60W 6-Port USB Power Port. Works great! :D

It's a great charger. I love the display info it supplies. I bought the 2A Xtar USB wall adapter to get the full 1A charge. With my (so called) 6 port 8A adapter that was supposed to do 2.1A on up to four ports at a time that Xtar wouldn't do 1A charging at all.
