My current standard build for the Kayfun 5 is a spaced, SS316L, 30 ga, 6 wrap, 2.5 mm inside diameter - about 1 ohm. I sometimes go with a 2 mm ID. I've tried 3 mm, but I find you start losing flavour at that point.

How careful an explanation do you want? This may be more than you're looking for, but what the heck:

  1. Cut about 5" of wire.
  2. Starting 1" in, wrap the wire around a 2.5 mm jig six times, leaving a few mm between each wrap.
  3. While still on the jig, push the coils together and hold them there for a few seconds, using some force. When you let go, you should have a fairly evenly-spaced coil with the wraps about 1 mm apart.
  4. Mount the coil on the Kayfun. I leave the jig in while I'm doing this, but whether or not that works for you will depend on the length and balance of your jig.
  5. Make sure the coil is well-centred.
  6. Remove the jig.
  7. Check the resistance. If it's in the expected range, dry fire the coil. If you couldn't get the spacing as close as you wanted it, you can use ceramic tweezers to gently squeeze it together just after firing. I find that if I squeeze it while firing the wraps wind up too close together.
  8. Wick. See Youtube if you want more detail here. I prefer KGD cotton, but I sometimes use Cotton Bacon. Note that you have to be careful not to use too much cotton because 30 ga SS is pretty flexible and the coil won't hold its shape and position if there's too much resistance as you pull the cotton through. I usually put my finger on the coil while I pull the cotton through.
  9. Put the tank on and check the resistance again before you fire. If something isn't quite right - usually tails that have been left too long - adding the chamber can cause a short.
  10. Enjoy.

Thank you so much! Do you find the spaced coils to have more flavour?

Try a couple different builds, a couple different gauges and just see what works best for you. Try a coil that's not spaced if your not using tc, and one that is, try 6 wraps, try 7 or 8, try 5 wraps.. just try..

You will find your own happy place that way. I can't really help you because I don't count my wraps. I don't vape a mech so it's not really an issue.. I just throw together a coil and get what I get..

You can count your wraps though, especially in the beginning til your used to building.

My personal preference is 26 gauge with Japanese organic cotton for my wick.. if you want to know what we all personally prefer. (Again, I don't bother with the whole counting business)

I'm not sure which is best but FT has messaging boards where people will review and report on the different clones.

Wicking is dependent on a lot of factors, including type of juice, airflow, and wattage. You'll be able to tell, probably, when it's time to rewick as you won't get the same performance or flavor.

Coils (unless they are nickel or titanium) can be dryburned clean and some can last a long time, some people use them for months.

OK my 2 cents onf KF5. I only use KF5 now because it is most consistent in how I like to vape; for flavor, MTL or wide open. Im preferring MTL at the smallest setting now after working down from my previous wide mouth RTA RDAs.
I use TC and 316ss spaced 6wrap 2.5mm. Organic cotton.
I am having trouble getting normal wicking right... cheezz even with 2 whole turns it wont wick good unless I open the top cap a turn or two and see the bubbles come up. I find myself doing that all the time now to get the best wicked vape all the time.
I do fluff the wick ends and they are short so not to clog the juice holes.
Its a minor inconvenience imo for a great vape.
But WHY?
BTW I couldnt get the Siren GTA2 to not give me harsh hits even in TC so I hung them out of the rotation for now, but they seemed to have possibilities similar to the KF5. And again WHY?
