Also wanted to mention, it is very personal whether somebody wants a box shape or a tube shape.

It's all psychological, I used to like box shapes, but now they just don't "feel right" to me and I am back to cylindrical shaped stuff.
:)

I would put one of each in your SIL's hands or better yet take them to a B&M to see, touch, feel some of the products

But why a product from a company that has had many problems and has caused fires even when you can get a dna 30 so cheap now? The last two iSticks I recommended, didn't last very long.

Haven't heard of fires with the istick 30 or 40w. Heard of some with the older 50w. Mine have lasted 9 mo, 6mo, and 3 mo and still going so far. Which version did you have?

It wasnt mine. It was a friend who I recommended a kit to. He got the iStick 50 and a simple drop on the carpet made his screen go out. I just think people are taking for granted just how cheap something like a DNA 30 is now.

While there are a great many options, I think the DNA is a really good one which is seriously overlooked and doesn't break the bank.

I'm a beginner and a istick 30 with a protank 2 is very easy! Good luck!

1 1/2 year vaper hear.
I'd probably swap the protank for a Nautilus. Only because the Nautilus can handle more power. That said I started with a Protank 3 on a EGO1100 batteries followed by a Mech mod. Then I got a Kayfun and a kick module. Still use the Mech and Kayfun(s), but current daily vape is a Reo Clone and a Chalice 3.

Sounds like a good deal on those DNA30s. for the record I've dropped my Istick 30s 4 or 5 times now on my concrete drive or garage floor and they survived along with the glass nautilus mini's, though the acrylic drip tip I had on them has broken 3 times. They're either solid or I'm lucky haha.

Perhaps the 30w is built better but I certainly wouldn't recommend the 50w.

A lot of the initial problems are the tank, not the battery unit. If an iStick holds up better than a pen, it's probably because one is being more careful with it instead of leaving it in one's pocket all the time. Smaller tanks are good for beginners (and everyone else) but do seem to cause an unusual number of problems for beginners. I almost wonder if the best thing is to go with a regular eGo/CE4 because it almost doesn't matter what someone starts with, they always end up having problems with it so it's better not to hate something decent!

Something cheap but good will be sure to not be a waste of money, as backup if nothing else, but some need something bigger and better, often it seems more a matter of having a device impressive enough for the user to take it seriously rather than what it actually does. I haven't entirely figured that out...

A mech mod with a .2 dual coil clapton coil and 15 mm of airflow :pervy: I sometimes feel shops forget what vaping was invented for. To get smokers off of cigarettes, smokers don't give a :censored: about clouds. I went to a shop once that was trying to convince someone to buy a mech mod with a velocity because that's similar to a marlboro. End of rant. The best imho is a mvp 20 with a nautilus.

I'd third the Nautilus mini plus CF4 suggestion. Perfect starter kit. I'd also add start with liquids less than 50VG or at least no more than 50VG. 50/50 will be fine for some clear liquids but for ones like vanilla that are dark, 50/50 could make the coils of the nautilus struggle. Whereas the nautilus vapes great with 80PG / 20VG and the liquids are very coil friendly so the novice user will experience better coil life and no dry hits. That said I'm using 50/50 in mine at 15W and not a dry hit ever, not even had one in the 4 weeks I've owned it, don't even know what a Nautilus dry hit tastes like yet...

My priorities for a beginner are...

    Safe
    Reliable
    Ease of use
    Flexible
    Inexpensive

    In that order

Seems we don't all share the same priorities.

When you're new you have to find you're preferred...

    Pg/VG blend
    Air flow
    Power level
    Nic strength

Nearly all these suggestions fail miserably in one or many of the above concerns.

Then the new user can be left frustrated and failing or constantly searching and spending.

I recommend subox mini kit and Samsung 25R.

Everything but juice & under $60.00.

    Reliable
    Adjustable
    Any pg/VG blend
    Safe battery
    Replaceable battery
    No leaks or shorts
    Restricted to wide open air
    Safe
    Just works

Everything matches and looks good out of the box.

You can get extra batteries for backup they're EASILY removable.

You CAN get a standalone charger For any extra batts.

But you don't have to. The device does on board charging with pass through.

A nice piece of kit at any experience level.

Thanks to everyone for all the great info and recommendations. I actually had to make a split second decision on what to get because my SIL was heading out on a trip the next morning (flight attendant) and I wanted to have a few hours to show her as much as I could. My vape shop didn't have the istick mini 20w or 30w in stock at the time. I ended up going with a Kanger Tech SUBOX Nano starter kit in bright pink. Save the tatas! My thinking behind it was the setup was the small size that she was looking for, seemed very beginner user friendly and has enough power(50w) that when she did feel comfortable with it she would have a wider range of possibilities. Hopefully I was right in my thinking. We will see. I will let everyone know what she thought of it after this trip she is on.

+1 on the nautilus suggestion. It's been my go-to tank since I started vaping some 2-3 months ago and had 0 problems with it. I've been using it mostly with 70/30 VG juice and it has no problem wicking, coils last forever too, think I have only had to replace the coil twice.

except for the color ;), I think it's a very decent choice! proven technology, not to complicated, decent power, and options in coils....so indeed good choice!
She has always been a big fan of hot pink. I figured she probably will get tired of the pink and hopefully by then she has a better idea of what she is really looking for.

Fantastic choice, I think. (Don't have first hand experience with the nano kit)

    What'd it set ya back?

The kanger Tech starter kit ran me $75 which was a little pricey IMO but like I said it was a last second decision and I would like to think I paid for a quality box which all the reviews point to yes. I have seen them online as low as $55 though.
