I've set the icing gun up with a flat piece of coffee filter paper in the bottom (covering a 3mm hole) and I've also rolled up a strip of the paper and stuck it up into the hole. This may be overkill.

The mix is in and I've poured some of the hot oil on top. I must say, I will be surprised if this seeps through. It looks like I'm asking a lot from it.

NOTE: All the mixture wouldn't fit in the icing gun. Is it possible to store the remainder in the fridge and do a second run (with fresh hot oil) tomorrow?

if you think it can handle more, then by all means add more. There are so many factors involved.. the type of tobacco, the moisture content, the amount of solution, humidity, temp, the fineness of the grind, etc. that every time I do a batch, it is different.
The only 'rule' to keep in mind throughout, is maximizing concentration, NOT efficiency(trying to get the most out of the tobacco)
one thing about using the icing gun with the oil,
if it has any rubber o rings or seals, the oil will swell and ruin them.
the plungers on the syringes I used don't fit anymore.

as for the plastics.... all I have used are polyethylene and polycarbonate. Not sure how other plastics hold up.

how was there room to add oil on top, if there was not room for the tobacco? :?:
if you are using the "interface" method, then you need a lot of height to give the oil enough head pressure.
if you intend to 'squeeze out' the mixture, then yes make sure it's saturated with oil, and yes you can do it in several batches.

in fact, at this point... take all your tobacco, put it in a bowl and add oil until it is saturated but not dripping. leave this for the day. Come back, load up your icing gun, and squeeze, load and squeeze.

tceight - I filled the syringe up to three quarters full and added a quarter hot oil to the top. I realised at that point that the syringe I bought was too small to take the full mix (I have about a third left unused). If you are suggesting I abandon this syringe attempt now and tip all its contents back (including the hot oil) into the mix container and then add more oil (if necessary) to saturate the whole mix - I am happy to do that.

I can then use the plunger on the syringe to squeeze out the oil from the full mix - tomorrow after it has had some time to sit.

Is this correct?

yes, if I am picturing your mixture right.
The tobacco matrix can only hold so much liquid, the sum of water and oil added together. If there was less water, then you need more oil. If there was more water, then you get by with less oil.
Add more oil, only if it keeps getting held up in the tobacco. if you put it on a plate, and the oil starts to seep out around the tobacco by gravity, then don't add any more. less is better.

don't refrigerate, just leave it covered on the counter.

now that I have all these syringes with ruined plungers, I just had another frankenstein moment. Stack the empty syringes up one on top of the other, 1/2 filled with tobacco/base/oil mix. add oil to the top, and let it trip down through each stage.
after you collect the first run, take off the top syringe, fill with fresh tobacco/base/oil mixture and put it on the bottom.
You could just keep doing this over and over, thereby reusing a lot of the tobacco, and oil, and getting a very concentrated final product.

Hi kinabaloo,

It's got kinda stuck.

This morning I half filled the syringe (icing gun) with the mixture and tried to squeeze it using the plunger. Only 2 -3 drops have so far come out - having applied a fair bit of pressure (I could press harder but I'm worried about bursting the coffee-filter paper disc I placed in the base of the syringe). It's a very poor yield so far!
