Ive always been a fan of the Protank but only under certain conditions,
1. It must be the original Protank 1 (airy draw is perfect imo)
2. It must have cotton wicks
3. It must be rebuilt (cannot sub ohm down to .3 or .4 though or maybe it can but i havent seen it yet.)
The protank 2 is cool too but i have to stick to my guns when it comes to my experiences and in my experiences the protank 1 just outperforms the 2 for me, it must be in how im vaping.
When i first started using protanks though it was all bad. Leaks gurgles vapor problems taste problems, but after time i learned how to get the most out of them and now they are truly beast mode imo. (mileage will obviously vary).
They are a fidgety tank but they have a big payoff. Anyways yeah i agree with op, protanks are my favorite tank of all time currently.

Yes I have found it important to pay attention to tilting the protank; the coil gets flooded; tilt it up and suck to unflood the coil.

I tried the PTII and the Aro Tank (two devices that work virtually the same exact way) and I simply would always get some dry, burn-ish hits. It may be some sort of mechanical residue in the tanks - they sure have a stainless steel waft if you put your nose to a cleaned tank - but I refuse to wash my tanks in any chemicals whatsoever so I have to judge it by how it performs after a distilled water soak. I tried removing some flavor wicks and flipping some gaskets, all of that, but the PTII just would not perform correctly past about 5 hits, and the Aro Tank would instantly taste burnt no matter what.

It's a little confusing because I know what dry hits taste like, without a doubt (very alike to a burning cigarette filter) but out of these two tanks, the vapor would actually taste black, burnt, or smokey (on juices that by no means are supposed to taste like that). Both devices also leaked a little from the heads a bit too much, no matter what, for my concerns - top coil devices tend to be virtually leak proof internally, and I appreciate that design much better. The one bit of good news is that the PTII is the only device I have ever used that does not leak around the seals of the glass or plastic - even my currently favored Smokin Crow leaks up a storm through top plate seal, I just have to be careful with it.

I first bought the PTII a few months back, after a period of having given up on vaping, and I read hundreds of reviews, and thought to myself "Okay, this is probably a device where there's going to be one bad head out of every 5, I can live with that." But I went through 11 heads and all of them tasted burnt no matter how much I tried manipulating and cleaning the heads without actually rebuilding. I was doing absolutely nothing wrong, my techniques are tried and tested. But this tank was simply bad stuff.

My lastest mix eliq was giving me a lot of burnt taste sometimes; turns out it was too much vg because it worked better when I added some water.

Other than that have a close look at the atomisers; it could be the atomisers alone causing the problem

I like original Protank (by Kanger) best, and PT 2 is ok, but they do perform best with either Kanger (genuine) coils or rebuilds, I do like the minis too....the PT 3 Dual coil is...meh .... not good, not bad (had worse)....I'm really sad that the original Kanger ProTank is hard to find....and I definitely haven't had any luck with the look-a-likes.

I vaped Protank for a long time and went to the PT2 when It came out. I bought a T3S one day in the local B&M and seem to gravitate toward it more than the Protanks. I think the low juice gurgle is what turns me off more than anything. The T3S seems to produce more flavor and sufficient vapor.

SmokTech Mega cartos Are my favorite vape, but I don't care for the 30 minute top off ritual.

This seems to be what I prefer as well. Aside from one aspire DBC all of my tanks use protank coils. All of them are glass or pyrex. Only drawback to me is the 2.5 ml size of the protank. Got around this with a puritank and a couple of hypertanks. I use the protanks and mini protanks at home but when I go out I need more reserve.

The protank II still gets a thumbs-up from me.
While the stock-heads perform good, but not great for me, rebuilt
heads with microcoils & cotton are great... i mean really great.

Stock-heads don't last me very long... a few tanks at best,
they don't take well to higher wattages or gunky juice.

For the people having really bad issues... i would make sure that
you get the authentic products. There's a lot of fakes around.
My best bet is to buy those 5-pack of heads with hologram-seal and
single pill-styled packaging.
