kayfun 1.8-2.0 ohm at 3.0 - 3.3V Rayon wicked
60% PG 40% VG ~20Mg NIC LA Cherry

Every few tanks I swap the coil and rayon. The buildup is disconcerting. Its all over the coil deck too and down into the air tube. Is this just carbon? I've searched and found other threads a bit inconclusive. Usually the explanation given relates to the juice maker adding sugar. I have not done this.

In the rayon threads I see many people with clean wicks and this makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if there is a health issue. I've seen some of the recent studies where they burn excessively and produce formaldehyde in the vapor as a result. As the gunk builds, resistance also increases and I'm forced to raise the voltage. Dry burning and new wick occasional recovers the coil. Sometimes one leg will disintegrate leading me to think this gunk may be corrosive. :2c:?

I think a lot of it has to do with the amount of wick you use. That looks like you may have too much in the coil but it's hard to tell. It's normal for them to get gunky and black though. You're also using a tank, so if you're juice is too thick with VG you won't be getting much juice to the coil fast enough if you're a chain vaper or the build isn't right. It says you're using a good amount of PG though, but jeese your wick looks bone dry. I really don't want to sound insulting, so don't take this that way, but you aren't dry burning your device with rayon inside the coil correct?

Coil's disintegrating can have multiple causes. It doesn't neccesairily mean your juice is corrosive. Dry burning oxidized("used") kanthal coils will decrease their life-time especially if the wattage, or comparatively voltage, is high. The easiest place for failure structurally is probably at the leg if you think about it (area with the least heat dissipation, the coiled areas can dissipate heat more effectively).

Formaldehyde isn't too much of a concern but yea burning cotton/rayon is not ideal. Still less material being burned than a cigarette. I switched over to a DNA40 with temperature control and don't get dry hits anymore (maybe one a week and it's not a real dry hit, more like a faint taste of cotton). If the burnt wick bothers you that much, then I definitely reccomend trying a temperature control device.

My 2 cents is to try using slightly less wicking material in your coil. Double check how you're wicking it to get juice in your RTA. Keep in mind coils and wicks have a life-time and do get gross over time. Always prime tanks before use as well, but I'm sure you're doing that already.
