I'm a psychotherapist. Had a man come in with atypical psychosis - I mean, wasn't right for schizophrenia, not right for any other psychosis, the symptoms just didn't line up and didn't feel right but he was absolutely crazy - sporadic hallucinations of all sorts, rages, dissociative episodes, occasional total disorientation, way, way labile, disjunct cognitive delays and thought disorders all over the place, headaches... all more or less out of the blue.
Took him and his wife two weeks to notice that all of this was coincident with Chantix regime. They didn't mention it on the meds sheet because "it's just a quit-smoking medicine."
Uh huh.
He's fine now.
I've got my own private war going on Pharma. Seen way too much. Sigh. The kids are the worst. And now they will call you a Scientologist if you're conservative about what gets dealt out. Grrrrr.....

It is even possible that high-profile incidents reported in the media are attributable to Chantix - it seems to be the last thing that anyone would connect with a heart attack, a suicide or a violent attack on a family; but we know from experience that it is the first factor to check.

I wonder if someone ought to pass this on to the press, it might be of interest to them.

And yet they are worried about the possible side effects from e-cigs?

Yes and no.... I knew the side effects from anaologs and still smoke 2 packs a day. I know want to get healthier so yes I want to know, but not sure how much it would stop me( unless super scary effects)

I was a person who never took meds hated them still do actually. I found out in February last year( still weird) that I have a bad back they put me on meds and the only side effect I cared about was weight gain to stop me from taking them... Some how acting crazy didn't concern me lol

Anybody noticed the new chantix side effect? Among the suicidal/homicidal....now chances of heart attack has been added. Still blows my mind its even on the market.

I tried Chantix when it first hit the market and I still have a visceral reaction when I hear the name. That stuff is pure evil in an easy to swallow pill. I had the lucid dreams(nightmares), waking hallucinations, homicidal thoughts, entire days lost from memory and then repeated... a full-on recipe for disaster. Thankfully I got off the pills, called in some vacation time and waited out the detox period locked in my house.

We need more Dr's like you, willing to talk rather than prescribe.

My sister was put on effexor after attempting suicide, and then I was put on it because they said I had PTSD and depression following my sister's suicide attempt. My sister later worked out her issues in therapy and got off the stuff. I did too once I got laid off and couldn't afford it, and then realized my life had gone to hell because I didn't care about anything while I was taking it (which likely led to my being laid off rather than someone else). I lost a couple of years of memories from before I ever took the stuff... years of my life I cannot remember, things my friends and family bring up that I don't recall at all from about 5 years ago. Things that should be memorable, too, like my sister's High School Graduation.

My real problem? A tendency towards anxiety attacks that had gone ignored by doctors, not chronic depression.

I was given a prescription for Chantix and never filled it, because at the time I really didn't want to quit. But I'm really grateful that I never took it. I can't imagine what that would have done to me.

(Slightly off topic, sorry)

In fairness, that sort of describes what I'm like before I've had coffee in the morning.

Seriously, though- as a psychotherapist, you must see it all the time: Drugs come in trends. When they have a drug to sell, they push it so hard into the public consciousness. I have a friend with a high energy seven year old who got a letter from the child's teacher recommending that she "see a doctor to have him medicated for his ADHD."

Not "to have him evaluated" or "to see if he would benefit from treatment." Just to have him drugged into being more easily manageable. As it happens, I'm not a psychotherapist. I'm a teacher with a lot of experience of kids, though- and there's nothing wrong with that kid beyond being seven and occasionally a pain in the .....

Scary stuff,

it really amazes me when i see a commercial for a new fancy "help" drug advertised on tv,,

seems the side-affects always out number the positive side of the drugs 10 to 1,,,has it always been that way ??
Not that I can recall, from my youth. Back in those days, people weren't lined up at the pharmacy to get their "scrips" either. We have been turned into a nation of prescription drug junkies.
