That is an awesome idea, I thought about that as well, I was going to ask my friend who blows glass and has a local "tobacco:rolleyes:" pipe shop, oh and those scales are for weighing jewelry, and those brass knuckles are belt buckles... :)

I know you blow "glass" but I'm sure you mean Pyrex, if they are Pyrex then I will take an orange and black one that is fumed please... :)

:w00t:  i can't wait to see them!

forgive me for my lack of knowledge on this, but what does lamped mean? i see you put bead making in parentheses - does that mean it'll have different colors in it?

lamp working is the way beads are made...you start with a metal rod and using a torch and sticks of glass build the shape you want on the rod then slide it off when it cools...i allows me to do more the just a tip...i can put everything from 3d snakes to butterflys, anything you could think of...

BUT.. b4 everyone starts telling me they want snakes and stuff on them...give my time to get the shape and technique down...lol:p

These glass tips are going to be the next best thing next to delrin. As long as you don't drop your PV on them i think they will be very durable. And from what i know from experience is that GLASS tastes the best vs metal, plastic. I am very excited for these and think it will be the next big thing for costom PV's!

How bad ... would it be to make a glass or very clear plastic drip tip???!!! Then you could see the vapor chalk up in the mouth piece. I think it would be very neat and i would most certinly buy 1..... or 4! lol.

I know there is a guy/supplier on here who blows glass and makes glass pipes and i think this would just be flat out sick! If anyone could get his attention to this thread it and get some feedback that would be AMAZING!!!! :toast:

That would be me, a guy, not a supplier. :) And yeah it would be cool. I'll make some next time I'm in the shop, which will probably be later this evening.

But I won't sell them on here. I've been pointed and wrist slapped too many times to even try.

You'll have to get creative as how to get one. :cough:pay it Forward:cough:

Glass tastes better, for sure. I'll make these thick and anneal them properly. Chances are good that they won't break. Even if you drop it straight on the d-tip.

I'll let you guys and gals know how it goes. If I get it made tonight I'll make sure and post some pics.

For those that don't know, mandrel wrapping isn't the only way. It's the bead lady way.:) No offense. :toast:

Another way is to take a 2" diameter tube, heat a 4" section and "pull a point" or pull it down to a thinner diameter to use as a blow tube.

Once you've done that, you rip your 'blank' off the rest of the tube.

So you have something that looks like this -------== The hyphens being the blowpipe and the equals being the blank tube. At this point (no pun intended) you heat your blank up in the oxy/propane flame to it's working point and shape, sculpt, blow, etc.

This is me flaring a tube to draw on the inside. Point in left hand, carbon rod in right.

And puffing, not blowing, to inflate the hollow vessel. The rod in my right hand is glass. Borosilicate insulates against the heat traveling down the rod, so it's cool to use as a handle opposite of the blowtube when you have a mass of glass.

They used to make glass (crystal actually) mouthpieces for saxophones* and other reed instruments. Like everything, reports on how they worked are mixed. I think the reason they fell by the wayside is their breakage factor.

Drip tips would be small and cheap to make in bulk so breaking one wouldn't be such a big deal.

A Pyrex mouthpiece would be great.

* There is a picture of one at the bottom of this page.

Pyrex is a brand name of borosilicate glass. Glass with a COE (coeficient of expansion) of 33. So my glass drip tips will be "Pyrex". Actually, "Schott Boro Artistic" if you want to get techincal.

no offense taken....i just think lamping would be faster for me....i love glass blowing but i love bigger items...somthing this small would drive me crazy when i need to make dozens of them:-x....i am also going to do some mold slumped and see how that goes...slumping would allow me to make them at a lower cost so they would be much cheaper.

It's still lamping if it's off mandrel, though. There's just some blowing involved. That sounds so dirty. But I think I can bang these out fast. 10mm heavy wall tube, heat, shape, carve a ring for the o-ring, rip it off, polish the hole and it's done. Probably 3 or 4 minutes/piece once I get the motion down.

I'm curious as to see how ours differ from eachothers. This'll be fun. There's another lamper on here, too.

These sound really great and I can't wait to see them. How about your registering as a supplier if this works out? No offense but the PIF thread is impossible to get anything on unless you sit at the computer poised to grab it all day long. I have to work unfortunately.
