It could be a little shorter, for sure. :) I wanted to give myself plenty of room for error, since this is my first attempt, and all. I still might shorten the body a bit... Right now, it's 3-3/8" tall. The same height as a Grand without the catch cup.

Don't get me wrong I like it a lot. I've just been watching to see what you were going to do with better tools.

Thanks Capt'n. :)

Not too sure about my wood workin' skills though....
I do still have a chunk of stabilized red maple burl.....
ETA: It's this one...

I think I'll leave the two I'm building now, raw aluminum. I need to turn that burl into a mod though. :)

You will find that the stabilized Maple Burl is one of the easiest to work with.

CC buddy if you can do what you've done already then I'm certain you can cut a couple of 3.5mm pieces off that beautiful maple burl slab and machine each side to fit them in. I'm just throwing ideas your side pal, I don't want in anyway to influence your design. I love what you've done with this and I believe (just my humble opinion) that some fine wood siding will just skyrocket the wow factor of this mod.

You've done a stellar job already that's for sure buddy :thumb:

My first attempt at hybrid'ing a Derringer...man I love having a lathe, so much easier :p

View attachment 424406

Basically I just copied the D pin up top, I ditched the slots and went with an oversized hole (not a big fan of the slots) and added a tail threaded to 6-32. I used Order Brass 464 Round in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com for this one...Pb free. Though machining brass without Pb is not fun, it's not copper nasty but close...

Direct connect to my beryllium copper contactor strip, no leaks, no v drop...no BS

I gotta try your hybrid setup at some point Quigs. I like what you did here with an all new custom made center post, made me go hmmmm interesting. :toast: I fully agree that for guys like us who vape the same atty everyday it makes perfect sense.

Seeing as CC has 2 of these I can let my opinion totally ride the fence on that ...the burl inserts would look pretty good but I get where CC may be coming from...I've been watching this build from the cheap seats (and looking on line for round over mill bits :p)...there's something so clean and minimalist about these builds I think I'm in camp CC on the wood thing...though I would be looking around for an anodizing shop...or try some bluing...or really feed the OCD machine and polish one.

I have a tendency to be very minimalist as well. I think a burled wood squonker would be great, but I know how I am. It would sit on my desk and I would actually use the one with the machined finish, I didn't have to worry about screwing up. I also just like the minimalist look. I have one of the nickel plated 14500 Minis all polished up in a Ziploc bag. I hate the damn thing. Every time I touch it, I have to polish it, so polished is out for me.

I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with this little mill. It's taken everything I've thrown at it, from a 1/2" radius corner rounding end mill, to a 2-1/2" fly cutter, to a 5/8" end mill plunging to almost 3 inches, to a boring head with a 3" boring bar..... I know it's only 6061 aluminum, but I wasn't sure it'd handle all that. So far, no complaints...

Little closer.....

you're looking like a vet with this machine CC! Fantastic work :)
What is the reason for the 510 though? Why not tap your own 510 in your top cap?

'Cause stainless steel 7x0.5mm threads are a lot stronger and more resistant to wear than aluminum ones?

Personally, I'm waiting anxiously to see how he holds the cap onto the body. I'm hoping it won't be with machine screws. ;)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he doesn't run a dedicated atty. Aluminum doesn't hold up as long swapping attys

No problem...I've got a dedicated RDA threaded into copper...it's not going anywhere.

that's what I want to do when the design allows from now on since I don't change atties either. Quigs where did you order your bit and tap? Seems like a read somewhere about a modder being dissatisfied with the 510 taps available.

for my buddy's I decided to use the FD v4. If you take a dremmel to the inside of the FD 22mm cap you can flip it over and thread it that way. Filling the gap on top with solder should be okay right?
