Thx for the heads up. looks like your creative juices really got going on this one[emoji1]

I'm thinking a set of compression springs over the brass tubes with some slots for roll pins would be sweet. Then the top and bottom caps would slide apart for battery changes and juice fill ups. A short bonding strap could be used to ensure conductivity.

I think it's a great idea and it's one that can be developed further IMHO. I've ordered some aluminum brazing rods to experiment with aluminum brazing because I saw the results and it's pretty much like a seamless weld. If I can achieve a good weld which can be sanded and polished I have some great ideas to try which I could only otherwise achieve with a CNC mill.

BTW if you could source some clear acrylic tubes for that mod I think it would also look cool.

was thinking along the same line, some kind of glass/acrylic enclosure would greatly finish this mod I think

I've been spouting off about embracing the non-conventional lately...figured I better put up or shut up...

I've been building this since Studio posted his copper box, as much as I hate working with copper the warmth and heft (and the fact that it's the 2nd best conductor north of -183 C :p) keeps drawing me in.

I wasn't going to post this as it pretty much represent everything guys on here wouldn't do i.e. it's a non-box (that's it, all exposed), zero safety measures, deliberate non use of SS (if they made a copper or brass body D I'd buy it).

The tolerances of the brass tubing is tight...it takes some effort to pull it apart to change the batt, but that'll loosen in time...when it does, I have some extension springs that fit inside the tubes that I'll anchor with tapered plugs.

it is what it is...

Now that is beautiful. I can see it with copper tubing for those who don't like the battery and juice exposed as well. Very minimal. It looks pretty short too. Is it?

It's about a 1/4" shorter than the top deck (not drip cup) of a Grand...full tubes was my first vision of this mod and if I make another I'll do just that...I just always wanted a skeleton mod (though there is something unnerving about holding a bare battery that is driving out +10A )

If you did get a short you would know it fast though. What keeps the battery tight? Is that what it tightens against?

...of this I have no doubt...it'll redefine hand warmer...

The friction of the telescoping tubes keeps the batt in. When I got the tubes they slid in/out of each other like a car aerial so I got some tension springs that will fit inside the tubes to keep it together...but I guess during the build the tubes got just a smidge off kilter and now it's nice and snug without them. But I'll keep the springs ready for when it wears in.

I really like the design. I have always been a fan of the K.I.S.S.(keep it simple stupid) method of engineering. I'm not trying to talk down any of the beautiful mods on here, but for a daily carry I want dirt simple. This one is that and is beautiful in it's simplicity. You might not want to listen to me though. I drive a Geo Metro. It's basically a go-kart with a top. It takes K.I.S.S. engineering to a new level. I get about 55 mpg and can get back on the road from about any breakdown with duct tape and bailing wire, but it ain't pretty.

Super job Quigs, I love it!! So many options here... leave it exposed, acrylic tubes, Clear tubes, wood tubes, copper tubes... Its almost like you could make it modular to fit your mood!

Wouldyou mind sharing your button/switch? I love the look of casings, and mine is tad tall. Would love to see how you attached the casing and how it works

Thanks! Geo

I couldn't really do that with this one, the batt o.d is 18mm and the pipe i.d. is about 20mm...I'd have to find a larger i.d pipe or turn some of it off so I could flange the different tubes so they stayed put...but not a bad idea :D

Here's the switch button, first off, huge thanks to Coalcreek for sending me the 9mm casings :toast:...I just filled it with 2 part JB Weld, cut it down and glued an nylon insulator on the end that both keeps it from falling out and electrically separates it from the ground body and the pos pin.

20150406_090206.jpg20150406_090727.jpg

add: some may wonder why I use nylon (it may even be HDPE) instead of a high heat peak material...I use it because makes for a much smoother switch action (things slide on it nicely and it takes a ton of wear)...if I used peak to handle the heat of a fault current, I've got much bigger problems than the switch getting hot...in a mod like this, I am VERY careful with my builds, this is not one of those mods where when you're finished your build you tap the fire button to see what happens  (who on this thread hasn't done that? :p), I actually metered this one (on mod)

I'd say sooner :D What's left?
Is your button ss cc?

Still waitin' on my magnets to come in. Once they do, I'll begin the arduous task of locating them to where they line up perfectly between the cap and body.... But, yeah, that's about it. :)

And, yes, 1/2" 316 s.s. rod, turned down on the lathe. :D

Is the bottom feeder working out for you?

still working just fine I do need to clean it. it's my first bottom feed so i over squonked for a while and the addy is a tug boat so you know that went over well. I do switch the top cap out with a el diablo baal. it fits the tug boat deck well. tug boat top has better flavor baal has better cloud and air flow.
