Well I discovered that the only way to get this sanded evenly is to start with one solid piece and sand it to pretty much the final shape then cut it. Otherwise it's impossible to get it even and level. I cut the basic shape on the bandsaw then shaped with a bench belt sander.
As for getting it smooth, I sanded with 500, then 800 then 1000 and final sanding with 2500 grit. The final sanding leaves it smooth as silk

I did something similar on mine, but not even close to your precision. You must have the steadiest hands in the sky....Hats off!

I haven't seen yours Gdeal but it also has to do with the choice of wood. In order to get control over sanding (especially with a belt sander) you need a hardwood and this is dark walnut which is hard. Then it's just a case of going with the sander and not trying to fight it if you know what I mean. Also bare in mind that I used the belt sander with an 80 grit for evening out of the basic shape then switched the belt out for a 150 grit for refining the basic shape. After that it was all hand sanding with the grits I mentioned in my earlier post.

I'm not particularly gifted but I have been playing around with woodworking of some sort for the last 25 odd years so I've made my share of screwups trust me.

Just want to take this opportunity guys to give Peter (pdib) a huge shoutout because his design is absolutely great in the hand and it hits like a heavyweight. The front squonk hole is fantastic and sits right on your finger making squonking totally effortless.

After making this dibie knock off I can't wait to get my hands on the original which looks about ten times better than my feeble attempt. For those of you thinking about ordering an Oliver from Peter I wholeheartedly recommend you get yourself on the Oliver list as soon as you can. If you still need some convincing here is a link to Peter's fantastic work.

Greetings friends

I'll start this post off by saying that back in June this year I contacted Peter (pdib) and got on his list for an Oliver R. Peter made it crystal clear that the list is long and distinguished and the wait period is running well over a year. Since I really love the look of his Oliver I have no problem waiting for such a beautiful mod.

Now the thing is I figured I'd make my wait a bit more comfortable since I probably still have 10-11 months to go. I'll say again that this mod is made for my personal use and since it's a knock off of a dibie it will never be sold.
It ain't no Oliver but it captures the Oliver theme and I made it full mechanical using Peter's tried and tested methods with a few twists (I do plan to install a fuse but I didn't have one). It's made of dark walnut with brass and copper contacts for minimum voltage drop and I used an old GG mech button. The positive contact is adjustable to ensure perfect contact every time. I still need to install magnets in the top and bottom caps and apply finish to the wood after a final sanding.

I was designing as you may remember another woodie squonker and was planning that as a full mech as well. I've now changed my mind on that and am going with a DNA-40 chip instead.

Looks great. One question if I can ask? How did you join the top and bottom to the battery/bottle section?
Sorry to say I'm not into bottom feeders YET. But the work you all do has inspired me. Thanks

I have been lurking on this thread. I am a wood butcher but I do admire good craftsmanship. Cpt Steve you have a gift. I am working on getting the courage up to try a basic box build. I have the tools and the wood but lack the experience. I have hundreds of softwood blanks so time to get after it. Thanks for the inspiration gentlemen.

If it's not screwed together I'm kinda hesitant about it...but that's just me and this is a bit heavier device and these are smaller magnets, but personally I wasn't happy with only magnets holding my mod together, I've always just used screws. I've gotten used to throwing this guy around, dropping it, tossing it in the passenger seat etc.

...using it as a hammer, a temporary anchor for the boat, a testing parameter for truck scales, a substitution for grabbing a few reps at the gym and protection from gangland large caliber crossfire...

Man!, that thing is awesome thatguy...that's gotta' be a satisfying chunk of metal to vape on...well done!

...jealous of the parallels in the background...my next purchase, tired of custom cutting blocks for the vice...

I finished my bottom feeder box enough to vape it. It won't survive being run over by a Mack truck or win any beauty awards, unlike others posted here, but it did turn out light at a bit over 3oz (94gm). This is my first regulated bottom feeder and loving it. Don't know how long it will last but I'll keep vaping it and find out :)

Nice job on the lay-out, but I fear that square bottle bursting a seam and taking out your DNA...and I'd feel really guilty as I was the one that started the "Rob should get Square Bottles" thread

You know...I have an appreciation for both heft and lightweight...I've built some of both (though not to the extent of othatguy's :p). I did a 3 week trip in Europe 6 months ago and you do a LOT of walking...

...in the beginning I never really had a bunch of love for my mech. el cheapo 18650/20ml 1590 Hammond polycarb boxes with hybrid'd clone Atomics (I built 2 special for the trip)...but at 170g full load batt./juice with zero care if I dropped it, kicked it down the street, seized by customs, etc...they became my best friends (and were way tougher than I gave them credit)...I ended up forgetting one in a pub in Belfast (hope it found it's way to a vaper, almost cool if it did, the other remains a "go-to" mod for me), a lightweight mod really is the way to go in the long run...though in retrospect I should've gone with an 8 ml stubby bottle (they're 20mm in diameter) and sunk the Atomics fully into the box body, lots of room and 20ml of juice is way overkill and would've been even lighter.

but there's something about the heft of a mil grade chunk of metal in the hand that's so satisfying

Don't worry about that, I've had no failures at all so far with the 6ml square bottles, they've been great. I will conformal coat the pcb with some good stuff but want to test it for a couple of weeks in case the DNA 40 develops issues, this is an early version PCB and the chances of problems are high. I'm also keeping a good lookout for any juice leaks because I've read that will kill the PCB pretty fast.

Certainly not a fan of plywood, but cheap and easy to work with using simple tools, and made it easier to build a custom enclosure size to see how the layout would turn out. I'll run with this for a while and see how I like the form factor.

you mean a picture like it

LOL sorry River I thought it was this picture from about 3 years ago or more. It was was when I discovered that I can make the GG button better that the hex design it used to be. Since then everyone modded their buttons and eventually the GG button changed to this.
