I'll admit, paying $70 for an RN4081 with two automatic batteries and only one atomizer, wall charger, and 5 carts isn't the greatest deal by a longshot...total impulse buy, and my generic 501 is on the way via mail-order, matte black with red and purple LED manual batteries instead of this "looks real, confuses people and gets you into trouble" "real cig" style...however, I'm happy I grabbed this device to satisfy my impatience and curiosity on the spot rather than smoking more and more cigs until I did sufficient research, and it wasn't a mistake in hindsight.
I bought some (also overpriced) peach and strawberry liquids (15ml, 18mg) from a "Colorado E-Smokes" mall booth (before making a TastyVapor.us order, which I can't wait to enjoy) and have had an excellent weekend using the "dripping" technique. I had the cig for over a week before that and was enjoying it as a cool gadget and toy, but didn't properly clear the "primer" from the atomizer, which was yucky for a few days, and I kept smoking normal cigs (about half as many) until this weekend because I wasn't getting a good throat hit and wasn't 100% satisfied with the device as a smoking replacement...until I started dripping!
The dripping technique is so satisfying it seems it can't be as "healthy" as using carts. I mean, my god, it's great. Way more satisfying than the cigs I smoked, but no sore throats, no harshness. Just a really intense feeling of fullness in the throat and lungs, if you do decide to go the full 4-5 seconds before the auto-batt cuts out. For me it only takes 2-3 seconds to get a nice throat hit. With carts you could be picking up more impurities with the various foam materials. Who knows -- I'm strongly convinced it's *all* much safer than smoking, as long as these devices aren't being made with toxic metals.
Knowing all of the concerns with the automatic battery, I've observed these rules:
1.After using 1-2 cartridges as prescribed by the device instructions, remove the poly and plastic inner cartridge. Drill the hole to at least 2X normal size to get a bigger throat hit and easier drag (if desired), clean thoroughly to remove plastic burrs, and use these as your "dripping" mouthpiece cartridges. No need to risk burning your tongue hitting the atomizer directly. They will very quickly "break in" with use and slide easily off of the atomizer.
2.Use no more than 3 drops at a time, typically 2 max unless you're really on the verge of drying out the atomizer. I was fortunate enough to find e-liquid locally (hopefully it's got decent quality control, it tastes great and has a good nicotine level) but I didn't buy any tobacco flavorings, and was craving them last night. Ironically, I opened up a piece of nicotine gum (packed in a "blister pack") and used the plastic blister to capture the "squeezings" from my stock NJOY tobacco-flavor cartridges. I added a little peach from my liquid and enjoyed it very much!
3.There's nothing wrong with "dripping" 1-2 drops max AND using a real wet cartridge to really pack your super-mini cig with liquid, which is also a convenient way to mix flavors and from what I've read the RN4081 atomizer likes to be kept wet all of the time and people typically drip a drop or two on it to keep it happy even when using carts.
4.Never hold the device in such a way that the liquid can drain into the battery -- always keep it level, or pitch the cartridge down towards the ground. I've observed this rule without having to think about it much, and have had no battery problems so far.
5.Disconnect the battery when not in use (I don't actually observe this rule as much as I should, but no problems so far)
After 48 hours of doing this and being completely off of analog cigarettes, I loaded three drops and held the cig absentmindedly for an extended period with the cartridge pitched down (sparing the battery). I did this for too long and noticed the e-liquid had oozed out of the cart and into my hands. Prior to this I've been very good about simply putting it down. If you're going to put it into your pocket (keeping in mind the atomizer is best kept wet from what I've read), try to keep it horizontally level. Breastpockets make this easy for me.
