Noob question, I have read this whole thread and am getting ready order the supplies needed to try and make the coil however I would like to make sure I have been able to wrap my head around this process and if my idea might work.

First off, sorry if this is long but better to ask first for a better chance of succeeding.

I know I don't have the best gear but I didn't want to fork out a bunch of cash if vaping wasn't for me. (turns out it is:laugh:)
Using a 1100mAh eGo starter kit. Replaced the ce4 tank with 2ml and a 3ml evod tanks and vaping on 18mg Aloha ejuice.
Love the way my 2ml tank pulls but the 3ml requires a harder pull. This is due to the length and/or air vents being to small If I had to guess. I have tried swapping the bases between the two with no changes which is why I hope using a vertical coil will help.

Making the coil is not a problem so I'll start off with the easy question. If I understand the process and based off of what I am using, making a coil out of 30g Kanthal with 12/13 turns and a 1/16 ID should give me about a 2.2ohm setup. Yes/No?

The wicking is where I'm having thoughts and wondering if any one knows if it has been tried and not listed. I see mention of using hemp string and cotton yarn/balls/qtips all with mixed results. Even seen someone using a Kleenex wrap with cotton balls. Seeing what others have done got me thinking of using a gauze wrap and cooking string.

Using the string would be like that of the hemp but the gauze would be wrapped around the coil under and held in by the top leg. I know some of you are going "It will be a PITA installing the gauze" after the test burn but I'm working out a jig to make the coils with correct legs angels and doing the burn before installing it into the head so the gauze can be done after the burn and before the install.

I hope this made sense. If not I will try and make a sketch on my next day off.

Hey no war, using gauze should be fine if it can hold enough juice. probably 2 wraps of it for some thickness, you want a enough juice around the coil for About 2 draws. Just don't wrap it really tight or you'll get a cotton taste. There are many different ways to do it, what ever works for you. Some like myself do a carto style core/ diaper wrap; some just do a light pack around the coil. A light pack may be easier in the protank, I use an odessyus.

Good luck!

Just finished my first Vertical build. Finished my first micro last night actually, and my first ever coil in general 4 days ago. I used 30g Kanthal around a 1/16" bit for a PT2. I don't have any cotton balls but I do have cotton wick, so I cut up a few roughly 1/4" thick pieces and took them apart and pushed the strands down the side of the coil like you would cotton ball.

On a Buzz Pro at 4.6 watts with Bounty Hunter this thing hits and tastes like nothing I have ever experienced!

I only bought 3ft of wire to decide if I was into RBA's, and I'm running low already and have become quite obsessed. Need a spool. And some cotton balls.

Thank you guys for this knowledge base and all your priceless time spent helping the community out.

Zen, DILLA CHANGED MY LIFE!! lol had to say it

Anyways, I've been building regular micros for my PT1/2 for a few months now. Tried the vertical a month or so ago but couldn't get it to give me a better vape than my horizantals, I don't think I figured out how to wick it properly either. So Zen, I used 30g on a 1/16' bit also - how many wraps did you do and what was your final resistance??

And are these coils meant for higher-power?? Because I usually vape my horizantal micros around 6.5-8watts, me eVic won't go above 11w/5volts.. I'd like to give it another try

Hi Nwar, and welcome to ECF.

While I've never used gauze, I think you'd be better served trying the gauze only. Never had any luck with cotton twine other than Peaches and Cream. I've tried butchers twine in other set ups and it just doesn't wick very well.

For a standard Ego type battery, I suggest you keep you coil around 1.8 ohms. These need more wattage to perform best than the typical coil. So more like ten wraps on a 1/16" bit. Really is very helpful to have a mod that can read ohms here.

The problem you'll likely run into wicking before installing the coil in the head is you have no way of test firing it after placing the coil. I've had more than my share of coils that were perfect going in, but wound up with one or more of the coils not touching together after manipulating the coil into position. If this happens, hot legs, and hot spots are apparent on a test fire and can be fixed or redone before wicking. I'm convinced that random reports here of burnt rubber taste is because of a failed micro coil build, rather than proximity of the coil to the gasket. Speaking of which, snipping off the top ledge of the positive connecter gasket stops burnt grommet syndrome dead in it's tracks, and makes getting the gasket in without deforming the coil much easier too. Another benefit to using cotton, hemp fiber etc. is that re-wicking is a snap.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Haha, I had a Donuts shirt on and Flying Lotus signed it for me. Also Peanut Butter Wolf invited us up on stage for a dance party after I was screaming "JDILLA CHANGED MY LIFE!!!" while he was playing Lightworks, and Dam-Funk came on at that point and killed it!

Anyway, I don't have a ohm meter yet as I'm just getting into this stuff. It heats slower than I'd like so I'd say it's around 2.2-2.3 based off of the thread with all of the wraps listed with their respected Ohm measurements. I'm going to do an 8/7 soon, that should be around 1.8 which should heat faster and produce a bit better vapor and flavor, happy medium you know. On the Buzz I'm vaping around 9 - 10.1 watts (if my coil is really @ 2.2) set at 4.7 volts.

I just bought a Provari off the Classies and I'm gonna get a Reo Mini + Reomizer soon so I'll have a way to measure Ohm and practice my building!

Just tried this out last night. 28g kanthal, 10 wraps on 1/8 drill bit came out to 1.4ohm. Amazing vapor and flavor at 15 watts on my vamo. Thanks for sharing this build. Here's a couple crappy pics I took of my build.

Well I just made 2 coils after picking up some .8 flat wire. was only able to get 6/7 wraps and still get it to fit. I now under stand what BSD is saying about test firing them before putting in the wick. FWIW I was only able to get 1.1 to 1.3 ohm using the flat wire however the vertical coil, cotton wick and opening up the vent holes in the base makes for a very easy and smooth draw with a decent fog and good flavor.
Looking forward to picking up some 30g and trying this again on my evod's and seeing if I can use the .8 wire with the tank that comes with the K1000 pipe I'm picking up next week.

BSD I love these coils man, it took me a little bit before i decided, why not, in fact i hover between here and the reddit ecig, and when i saw it there, it reminded me of when i saw this a while back and wanted to give it a shot... so i did it, and its not a perfect micro coil, but i like it... only problem... it pushed me to finally getting a genesis, im not sure i will even touch my protank once my aga t2s arrive... at which point my wife will probably adopt it...

its crazy, she has adopted anything i dont use... i no longer have my back up ego v v2 because i told her she could use it once when her passthrough died and i didnt want to move so she could vape while it charged, since then its in her normal rotation...

That's awesome! Ecf is at the cusp of the vaping world.

Literally within days, I saw a lot of people come to ecf, see it and take it to other venues as their own and make videos and stuff with-out giving credit to ecf or the people they got it from. It was obvious they got it here on ecf. That irritates me a little but hey that's how the vaping world is. now people around the world are enjoying these vertical coils. It's amazing how it exploded.

Hey Bsd I've got the hemp working for me. I've found I have to use a little more density and moved to just a light fill around the coil in the oddy and getting good results. There really is a lot of hemp here. Thanks bud.

OP...just so you know, this coil is famous...I was at the Jacksonville Walmart on Normandy Drive last week, and found a cluster of three guys having a vaping "staff meeting" near the pharmacy..they were talking about this vertical micro coil :)

Lets start a pool for date of first Chinese pre-made version comes out:) I'm down for 04/01/2014. Would have went sooner, but they have their big Holiday coming lol.

Glad you have the hemp going Jeremy. Is in all of mine now.

BTW, speaking of Chinese, I ordered one of their Kafun clones to play around with. Will be vertical of course, and will give me a chance to try out your Viva diapers along with some sub ohm builds.

Cool.. Been using hemp for a week or so now. With the hemp I stop using the diaper and do more of a pack as of a few days now. It works better with the hemp and I'm trying to get longer wick life with all hemp.

Yeah look at all the clones out there. Copying is the world of vaping... Oh well it's amazing how fast it spread through the vaping world once we started posting it up

We create change and they follow!
