Hello all, getting back into my Vaporizer and I'm having some difficulty with my Kayfun Lite Plus. After much experimentation, I realized I have a sensitivity to PG, so now I'm making my own 90% VG / 10 % Saline juice. I've been using boiled cotton as my wick. (I also had these problems when I was using PG/VG juices, but more pronounced).

The issue im having is this: The builds I make only seem to last a couple of days before the wick starts charring (starts turning black, and turning my juice a darker color), and it starts irritating my throat, no matter how much water I drink. I have to take several primer puffs after a couple of draws or it doesn't seem to wick right, even if I make the draw tighter, or it floods if I make it too tight. I can't seem to find a medium ground. The only way I keep the throat irritation away is to keep it slightly gurgling with liquid.

After about a day or two, I find all this gunk on my coils I have to dry burn off (after removing the cotton). The cotton is loose enough that I can pull it out of the coil without any snags even when saturated. I've tried making the cotton long enough that it is filling the bottom (didn't seem to wick very well though), and cutting it short in line with the inner casing threads (this did a little better). I'm using microcoils, 2.0 ohms, running on a Provari at 4v. When I vape, I power it for about 3-5 seconds. Any less and I don't get much nicotine.

I would love some advice here, as I can't seem to get this to balance. I have made sure it's all screwed together correctly, so it's maintaining vacuum.

Thanks in advance!

I find that a 1.2 to 1.4Ω build (28 ga./6 tight wraps on a 1/8 bit) works best for me in a KFL+. I use just enough cotton to stop it just above the juice channels and it wicks pretty decent then. I've got one running at 10.5 watts on an MVP2 right now, nice vape using 50/50 juice, not sure about using max VG with that setup tho. Hope this helps.

Yep, at 2.0ohms if you are using 28ga. or thicker, the coils is not heating properly with such short draw times.
Coil is loading up with syrupy caramelized liquid.
Your Mixes are also a concern. Depending on maker, some are Coloring heavy and will gunk up quickly.

Maybe give my Nested build a try. It keeps things wet and seems to extend time between rewicking. Even on my Chocolate/Toffee/Cappuccino

By saline you mean salt water? The salt in your juice might be causing some of these issues. Another thing to try is making larger diameter coils. Microcoils, especially really long ones, can dry out the wick in the center of the coil. Going up to a larger diameter means the juice doesn't have to travel as far to reach the center of the coil.

Good luck!

The salt in that saline solution is a bad idea , it's gonna pit the stainless steel eventually and it might cause a chemical reaction with the metals in the coil , it's best to go with distilled water . Other than that without seeing a picture of your build and not being familiar with your mixes the best advice I can give you is to find a vendor that does 100%VG , I have problems with PG as well and I get most of my juice from Heather's Heavenly Vapes , anything in their purity line can be gotten in 100%VG , their extracts and flavorings do not contain PG and even their NET's burn clean . But post some pics of your build if you can otherwise it's impossible to identify a wicking issue as the culprit .

How many ml's would you say you go thru during that period? I like to switch my cotton after 2 full tanks, regardless if I vaped it all in a day or 3..

Hope you can get it sorted and another vote for posting some pics of the build if you can. G'luck!

Well, I'm still having the same issue, now with my Igo-L. I decided to ditch the Kayfun for a while to see if it was a wicking issue, but now I'm doubting that. I've always kept the Igo-L saturated, and I started buying a commercially available !00% VG liquid, Maximum Velocity I think by Mt. Baker.

How does one put pictures up here so I can show you all my build? I've been using it since saturday, and beginning to have enough issues that I'm using biotene mouthspray on my throat with every vape.

I also tend to only go through about 1-2 ml's a day. I've been getting the issue with all levels of nic, though down to 9 is somewhat tolerable, but isn't hitting my nic needs. I've also been experimenting with different wicks. For some reason or another using silica makes me feel like someone is poking the back of my throat with a needle. Cellucotton has been working ok, and is what is in my current build. I did a mesh and it was pretty good, but really would't wick 100% vg very well.

one thing to note is it seems like you don't have quite enough wick thru your coil. you mentioned when you go to re wick the old wick pulls out super easily, well this shouldn't be. it should definitely have some resistance when pulling it out, i mean it shouldn't have so much resistance that it pulls your coils over but it shouldn't just slip right out either. so for one add a little more cotton thru the coil, but by doing this it adds thickness to the tails that run down to the deck which can be a little to much. so you may need to thin the tails just slightly because you added more in the coil. this little extra wick in the coil will help your dry hits but may not help your gunking. this info is for the kayfun

That coil was built at 1.8 on 28g. I've been running it a 3.5-4.2v. It is building up crust pretty quickly. Am I running the volts too low? I based what to run it off of based on my old ego's, that ran between 3.3 to 4.2v.

That build is also wicked with cellucotton. Should I be making the wick thicker?

Personally I would be increasing to get the max wattage of the provari which is about 15 watts, this would be 5.2v. This is totally safe but you need to experiment to see. The wick shouldn't pull out really easy like you stated previously. After a few mls, you said you opened up the tank and the wick just slipped right out, this means there is not quite enough.

Cellucotton should always have more density than regular cotton. It does not swell when saturated. Poor coil contact will deliver harsh hits and likely fast burn/gunk build up.

I have just rebuilt 2 of my kayfuns with cellucotton. Slightly fuller wicks, carefully tailed to avoid blockage and I am still running a thin Halo ring(wick) around the coil, above the wicks.

Ok, just to give you all a view of what's happening, my throat has started feeling trashed again tonight, s I decided to yank the wick. Here are some pics of what it looks like. I have used no dark liquids on these wicks. I think they have been being used for about 4-5 days or less.

I just rewicked it with cellucotton again, and tried making it thick enough that it was pulling on the coils, and is not loose. Lets see how that works out.

When I pulled out this wick, it did tug on the coils a little, but not move them.
