Hope this is in the right spot.

I have tried a few times to figure out what may be wrong.I dry fire my coils, they get built up pretty heavy.I'll use a bottom coil for a pro tank as an example.I remove the flavor wick, dry fire it till it quits smokin, blowing out the ash, soak it in hot water before and after to help clean it,run it in the sonic cleaner etc.put a new flavor wick in it but I still get a burnt flavor/taste.OK question.Should I remove the coil wick also.Same on the other heads like the vivi novas etc.

I use mostly tobacco types, well most all of them are.No bakery types,a couple fruit flavor mixes but mainly tobacco types. All are pretty clear cept halo voodoo and a couple mountain oak vapes types.Any help at what I could or am doin wrong.I rebuild my coils, both types between 1.8 -2.2 ohms seems to be my sweet spot on each type.I also have new store bought coils also.I know I am probably missing something....Thanks.

The silica should not burn. You can torch the stuff and it just glows.

Hm, sounds like you are rinsing it very well. Is there any chance the wick is not getting saturated enough after the dry burning? Are you priming it well before reassembling the head? Or, are the coils getting bent out of shape at all during this cleaning? I find that if I have a coil that is not touching the wick I get a horrible metallic taste.

You can, if all else fails, replace the wick. It's hard to replace with silica. You could get some 1 mm silica and pull it through the coil with a piece of bent kanthal used like a needle threader. Using this method you'd have a doubled piece of 1mm silica for a total of 2 mm through the coil. You could also rewick with cotton in the same way. As long as you get the amount of cotton right, that should eliminate the burnt taste.

hey spaz.I load up my cartos and let em sit for an hour or so and prior to putting the caps on,the caps that go over the coils/wicks I throw a couple drops on em prior to doing that.Yeah I thought of re-wicking but figured I might as well rebuild the whole thing fresh if'n I was going into it that far. Some of these wicks are in pretty tight so it would be kinda hard to re-wick without destroying the coils. The coils are centered and straight,no spaces/gaps in them, that being one coil closer to another leaving a gap in the overall coil..I'm kinda stumped but figured some old pros may have a clue to what I may be doin wrong or different. Thanks for all your help folks.

No actually you were a help,a big help.Ya just comfirmed that I wasn't nutz.LOL..And I thank you for that.My wicks are tight but not too tight, there is some play that I can barely slide em back and forth but with some slight restriction if that makes sense.

Speakin of airflow,I'm gonna open up the holes in my pro tank mini 2 base a bit. They feel too restricted for my tastes.Just open one of the three first.Anyway that's another story.thanks again

I have the same luck, seems a cleaned coil- Using several different methods- Just does not deliver that factory flavor. Something new and undesirable seems to be introduced, and I too wonder at this. I've decided to generally just use new ones and/or fully-rebuilt units, I like to fiddle with stuff and save a few $ but have been disappointed too many times. Sorry I'm Zero help! At least you're not alone. Cazan

Thanks nikkel and everyone for the imput.I looked at the grommets, all are in satisfactory shape meaning I see no dis-colorations (hot legs) if you will.It isn't really a burnt rubber taste I am getting, more like a burnt gunky coil taste after burning them clean.I am putting a new wick on them even and still get that "not like a new coil taste"..I am just gonna start rebuilding them from the ground up.I do find it hard to pull new wick through the coils already there in place(original coils).

At least I can get pretty much any ohm I want, like from 1.8 -2.5 consistanly depending on my wraps and taste.I do notice on old (original) and new coils, once used a few times the ohm rises to 3-4 ohms and more thus why I was burning them clean whch did lower the ohms but got the burnt taste..Nothing like a new coil flavor though.

I started out using the Protank, and faced a similar issue. But for me, I got a 5 pack of replacement heads, and kept getting a very nasty taste. Eventually figured out the the 5pck they sent me had machine oil on them. I tried soaking them in Everyclear, and dry burning, but it didn't help any. Realized it would be best to just rebuild them. I thought about the whole situation of: having to order more rubber grommets, dry burning the silica and trying to not burn the grommets, and ordering more replacement heads -- just for primary fact of needing them to rebuild.

I just tossed the Protank aside, and learned how to build the AGA-T2 (or RSST). Since then, I've pretty much mastered the whole concept, and constantly get 2.0ohm while using 4volts. Best choice I made when it comes to Vaping.

Some good tips here. It will happen eventually with these at some point for sure.. but I have best luck rinsing, dry burning, rinsing then pat the wicks dry, dry burn again rinse pat dry wicks. Still get burn taste after this? After first dry burn drip some alcohol on the coil itself and let set for a few, rinse pat dry dry burn rinse dry. Any better? If not try a few drips of mouthwash on the coil between dry burns, soak rinse, burn, rinse, dry. I've had luck with that freshening the coil.

The only thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned yet is you are either:

Not allowing enough time for the clean (dry) wick to prime before firing it for the first time. It's shouldn't take more than a minute for the wick to take up enough liquid to prevent that from happening.

You are firing the clean coil too hot. Drop you voltage/wattage as low as possible when starting a clean coil and move it up as necessary. New or clean Kanger coils don't need as high a voltage as a used, mucked up coil.

Sounds like waaaaaay to much trouble to even deal with... especially when it sounds like hit and miss.

The wick is silica - you cannot burn it. To clean it you expose the top wicks directly to an open flame even and it does not burn.

True. Silica won't burn. However, the more it's dry burned, or rather... heated up to burn off the juice to allow it to reach the dry burning stage - the more brittle it becomes. After a couple of dry burns, you may notice it getting a bright white color that's almost 'flaky'. This is where silica concerns me. It becomes so flaky that it can actually break off into tiny particles. Some people have described it as "pet hair getting lodged in the back of your throat." And also, you're taking a chance at burning the rubber grommet as well. Once you burn that by pulse firing the coil for dry burning... you might as well throw it away.

Really think you guys will have a more consistent experience learning about RBA's. You can use sterile cotton or SS Mesh. I personally use the AGA-T2. Just cut a piece of SS Mesh (#500) into 1.5 x 2.0 squares. Blow torch it to Oxidize it. Roll it into a smooth wick using a paper clip. Spin it down into a MiniCoil (Kanthal 30g wire wrapped 8x around a 3/32 drill bit). Pulse fire it a couple of times to make sure there's good connection with the coil and mesh. Fill the 3.2ml tank. Done. Enjoy vape all day long.

Oh, and all you need to buy is SS Mesh (or Cotton), and Kanthal wire. For less than $20 you can order enough mesh and wire to last a long time.
