Is it just me or are there other people sketched out about buying stuff or trading stuff from people on ECF...I look on classifieds and think to my self..."If I send this person cash...will I ever get what I paid for or will it be some big hassle trying to get my money back." I see some good deals but catch myself and not put in an offer or what not. Thoughts? Experience?

(Happy Thanksgiving btw)

I figured as much...just getting a lot of offers from my new jonboy lava tank that I want to trade...just don't want to run the risk of not seeing something in return...thanks....
I generally stick with longer term ECF members with over a hundred posts. So far so good. Just ask all your questions up front and check the negative feedback thread. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

I've actually had the same fears as you have. Spent a lot of time looking through the classifieds and try to find vets that are VERY active to buy from. Unfortunately, they sold faster then I could spot them.

Made only one purchase from a lurker that's on here. I was still skeptical even after I paid for the mod. Luckily he showed up on REo's lounge and everybody knew him. Everything worked out fine and I walked away with a Great looking REO mini woodville.

There actually isn't too many bad transactions that occur from the classifieds. And, usually, you'll see the same name popping up in the negative feedback throughout several posts.

The best advice when you are thinking of dealing with someone who doesn't have a lot of buying/selling history is to immediately check their previous posts. You'd be surprised at how much info you can get by checking back a little bit.

Everyone has to start with their first transaction to get a little history behind them. So, no history doesn't always put up a red flag.

Don't "gift" your payment to anyone you haven't dealt with in the past. And, use your credit card as payment if possible. That way you have better protection as a buyer if you need to dispute a transaction.

Members who use the classifieds for trading/buying/selling on any regular basis never want to have their name end up in the negative feedback section. So, they will usually take extra care to ensure things go as smoothly as possible and the people they deal with are happy.

Check the negative feedback thread, go into their profile and contact some of their friends - biggest thing, I check their last 30-50 posts to see how they talk and interact on the forum. Also you will be able to tell how active they are on the forum. That tells alot about person most of the time. You tend to get a feel for them. Not all transactions go well no matter what. If you are tentative, ask for references from past deals.

it really ticks me off when people post high price items in the classifieds and can't be bothered to post pics! High post count, good rep doesn't matter to me if you can't post pics of what you're selling!

Yes!

The postal money orders don't allow any recourse for a bad deal either. It's best to use an online payment service. Don't gift the money either.

Never bought off the classifieds here but I've made dozens if not hundreds of deals off of other, more local forums with only a couple of bad deals. I generally make sure that the seller meets certain criteria:

- Has been an active member of the board in more than just the classifieds for at least a month with at least a couple dozen posts
- Can provide a verifiable phone number, preferably a land line
- Has good feedback, either on the forum or on Heatware (and you can verify that the Heatware is the seller's). I'll accept negatives depending on the nature of the negatives given and the rep of the person giving them. I'll also accept eBay feedback if I can verify the account they've given me by sending the eBay seller a question asking them if they're the same seller as on another forum and to name the forum they're selling on and item they're selling, then inform the forum seller I've done so and for him to respond to the eBay question. If they can't, I don't deal with them.

A few precautions and you should be safe. :)

I couldn't agree more with this!! I notice it more here than any other forum I've ever been on. High price but no pics. Also buyer to pay PP fees. It's your item your selling pay the dang fees yourself, or price your item accordingly to eat them. That is in your agreement that you agreed to when you got a PP account.
