Thanks muchly to the OP. I have two fully mech Mods made by a wee Spanish man under the trade name of Delaniemods which I bought when we didn't know what was going to be banned by the EEC and which I use daily now.

Both of these have magnetic switches and have pinless 510 tops so I only use them with nautilus Mini tanks with 1.8 ohm coils. Both are vented top and bottom.

To my shame, I have done this twice. On returning from an evening spent with the proverbial "Evil Companions" in licensed premises I have attempted to set each of these up when "under the affluence of incahol" and on both occasions have not centred the magnets on the bottom of the 18650s properly meaning that when I pressed the fire button the wrap was stripped and the whole mod got hot as the bars of Hell.

Thankfully on both occasions I had just about enough sense to recognise what had happened and took the things apart pronto.

Mech Mods are simple and brilliant....if set up and used with care.

Mech Modders can build the safest mech in world but at the end of the day it's still about battery safety. In my area of Pennsylvania, shops are pushing the junk batteries. There are very few mechs that specify what battery is safe to use. House of Hybrids recommends AW nipple top batteries and don't go below 1.0 ohms on the coil. I think mechs should be sold with instructions that explain what batteries and attys pair with their product.

Problem with that is.... Nobody is going to take the time to read it. It's a plug and play world nowadays and making money far out weighs most people's thoughts on safety. Until some one dies or sues nothing will make the people change. All the regulations in the world can't fix stupid and speaking of stupid.....looks like I got 500 pages of pure BS to read....Don't worry the FDA will make it safer

I agree with the OP about safety, however, I have to ask a serious question:

Does anyone believe that anyone is going to get a device approved that can connect to virtually any atomizer, let alone one where the user can just as easily put in a 5amp battery as they could a 30amp battery?

unfortunately we can not count on business to correct this problem. even now with the threat of regulations they continue with business as usual. the makers of mechanical mods and the vape shops that sell them with no concern for their customers safety are their own worst enemy.cloud chasing may seem cool to the immature but with that immaturity often come ignorance and recklessness.if the industry does not start acting a little more responsibly then government may regulate them out of business
Agree completely

I would also like to see collapsible "heat springs" used... try to prevent a catastrophe before it gets to that point. I understand there will be some that would replace the safety spring in order to use extreme low builds, but that's on them.
Springs usually cause voltage Drop.

All of the mech mods i had had magnetic switches

The way to ensure safety is to buy batteries that are not crappy re-wraps that overstate their abilities and to build coils that don't overstress them.

Springs, fuses, whatever makes no difference if you have no idea of the operating parameters of the gear you are using.

As to regulated mods venting - i once bought a Groove from Madvapes and they were recalled because a simple drop on the floor would puncture the battery and it would catch fire.

I'm all for safety and knowledge, but a witch-hunt against mechanical mods i will not join.

Bravo! I agree completely.

I've never used any mod but a mech, and never will. People who blow them up do so ignoring the rules or failing to learn them. User error. I know what I'm doing with mine and have not had any problem with them ever.

Thats not good enough for the bleeding heart Bureaucrats!

Let's just admit that there is no way to make a mech "safe" for the "uninformed end user".

IMO, the continued availability of unprotected mechanical mods hurts vaping as a whole.

THERE, I SAID IT.

I have to disagree, I think the continued availability of uneducated cloud chasing idiots hurts vaping as a whole.

THERE! I SAID IT!

Actually there is no way to reduce the limits of Idiocy and carelessness.

When I decided to purchase my first Mechanical mod - late 2012, there were no B&M's in my area and I knew no other Vapers locally.
I only had my curiosity and desire to learn to safely guide me and a Good search engine(google) to assist.
No B&M techs
No Manufacturer directions or warnings.

3 years later and the only coil I have ever built below .33ohm TI/TC is my .097 Ni on a TC mod. Why...........The equipment I use and the Math says it is safe so long as I maintain everything in good order.
No special Mech training, No classes, No user manuals.........just self interest.

Been using mechanicals about as long as anyone on here, and have never had any sort of problem.

However I take a little different approach than most. I'm not interested in seeing how many amps I can squeeze out of the battery, or how low I make the coil's resistance. Nor do I have any interest in creating a weather front. But I insist on a damn good vape.
Instead I have spent my time learning how to make them as efficient as possible. Learning to get a great all day vape from 3ml of juice instead of 30. Getting that magical one hour of vape time from 100mAh of battery capacity at less than 3 amps instead of 30.

The lowest resistance coil I've ever built was .4 ohms. (10a using a 20a battery) Believe it or not, I thought it to be a lousy vape, and went back to a 2 ohm coil which produced twice the flavor at half the heat.

The best part of any mechanical mod is between the users ears.
