So I have a Provari with ext. cap, and am about ready to pull the trigger on a smok Tek Telescop mechanical MOD.

Are the AW IMR batteries safe to use with this device?

Device looking at: The Rebuildable Vented Telescope, Stainless

I just would really like to be able to buy a few more AW IMR batteries that would be able to be used in both the Provari and the Telescope. Thanks in advance.

I would contact madvapes CS and ask them what batteries it uses. Normally it would be in the description but on there it's not. AW IMR batteries should be fine but which ones to use, that's the question.

I agree with Silent, you can easily use IMR batteries in a mechanical mod with no problems, even though IMR's are generally used in variable voltage mods that use a boost circuit.

The thing to consider is battery length. Protected batteries may be just a hair longer than non-protected batteries (IMR), so the IMR's might be a tad short to make contact. Some mods are also finicky about whether the battery is a flat top or nipple/button top.

I use the same AW 18650 imr batteries in my Provari, variable voltage gripper-box mods, and my mechanical Silver Bullet. The convenience of using a single size battery in multiple mods is unquestionably prudent.

The choice is yours to make, but although IMR's are a safer chemistry battery, a mechanical mod has no electrical circuit protection against battery shorts like a variable voltage mod does. You might consider using one of the small fuses that fit in the battery compartment. Having said that, I don't use them myself in my mechanicals.

I learned that if the mod isn't regulated then the battery must be protected. AW protected batteries are the 1st recommendation. You'd have to ask a battery guru what the consequences might be if you use unprotected or IMR batteries in a mechanicql mod. But if you can use a kick in this particular mechanicql then yes, you need to use the AW IMR you already own because the kick is regulating things. The AW protected batteries at precision T manufacturing can be trusted. Protected batteries cost @ 1/3 rd more than AW IMR unprotected.

so if i get that 2 cents fuse, i should be ok? I just don't like having to have separate batteries for the two devices, but if that fuse i'll post the link below, will allow me to use (and buy 2 more AW IMR 18650's) then I would be purchasing it today.

I got one coming this weeked but my top cap is press fitted,it dont unscrew,i want the one your getting now?

just heard back from Mad Vapes, they said an AW IMR would be fine to use. their reply:

Using the IMR batteries in the telescope should be just fine. I have not heard of a "2 cents safe fuse".The Telescope can use flat or button top Li-ion, IMR or NiMH batteries in varying sizes including 16340,18350,18650 Li-ion and our 4.8 NiHM battery. Have a great day

HeavyRocker, yeah the one I am looking at has the top cap that threads on. they did this because people were complaining that if the device is screwed to tightly with the battery in, the top cap was popping off for some people, also it allows for easy replacement should something go wrong with it.

Everyone i know says you should NOT use unprotected batts in any mech Mod,i wont,the best part about the top caps unscrewing is you can add the kick easier and the top pin is adjustable and makes it easier too clean the brass pin from oxidization,only drawback is the model your looking at has all those long vent holes and the batts show tru,minor tho.

Not sure bout the Sigelei,but the one SS Scope model from madvaps has the screw of top cap,some SS Scopes are press fitted,hey,speaking of press fitted,dont all electronic Mods have press fitting heads,except the Evic of course.

The telescope mod mentioned by the OP is fine with AW IMR batteries. And the telescope doesn't care if the batteries are flat top or button top. I have a telescope and it'll take just about every battery I've thrown at it (that are safe for PVs).

i wouldnt use protected batteries, imr batteries are recommended for mech mods, they are safer chemistry and the protected batteries will cut off the amps required to properly run a mechanical mod. 10 amp minimum is best to use...

Yes, an IMR high drain is perfect for a mech. It's a safe chemistry. They will not explode. Just make sure the mod is vented somehow. That is a must.

Well why does the vendors tell you NOT TO USE UNPROTECTED BATTERES. in mech mods dont make sense too me.

By Unprotected Batteries, they're referring to the old li-on batteries that were sold a long time ago. They're still carrying the warnings from a previous generation of batteries! The are not referring to IMR batteries.

If it's Li-ion use protected. IMR doesn't need a protection circuit. Li-ions explode in a failure, IMRs get hot in a failure. I exclusively use IMR batteries in my mods, mechanical or regulated. just my $.02

Just thought I'd add - Did not see Smoketech brand mentioned on the page. Looks almost like my Sigelei Tele. Any IMR, Pani CGR, Ultrafire XSL all will work without issues.

The IMRs are great for mechanicals... But the Telescope is, IMHO, about the worst mechanical out there. The switch in particular is awful, and there's a wire that runs from the positive battery terminal to the head, making it just barely a mechanical at all.

I don't know if recent Telescopes are still built the same way... I ditched mine long ago, but I was extremely unimpressed with the one I had.
