I've been vaping since June when my wife and I had decided together that we were finally going to quite. She bought the nicorette inhalers and I got my first vaping kit. She still smokes and I still vape.

Her excuse is that she'll wait until I have it down pat. She has seen me go through several PV's now, experimenting with carto's, atty's, voltage, juices .... She can't be bothered whereas I've dealt with it as a 'hobby' thing and have gotten right into it.

She has a point that is probably valid for some. It's a constant learning experience and for me that's been fun. For her, she can't be bothered. I haven't given up trying though and I seem to be getting her to try it more and more. I'll make that breakthrough eventually.

If a family member were to start smoking again I'll be duck taping them to a chair and forcing them to watch all the horrible anti-smoking videos on youtube. They will never be able to light up a cigarette again without seeing in their mind the Black lung autopsies, cancer tumors and calling cigarettes Coffin Nails. Cigarette smoking is a serious addiction that may require serious intervention. One afternoon of educational confinement intervention could bring us many more years together for love. Thank Gawd we have a painless alternative in vape!

It really is frustrating to watch others ignore a lifesaving tool. But, then again, I ignored it for a long time before my curiosity over-rode my cynicism. Been there, done that. We all come along at our own paces and all we can do is to be there to help when asked.

How often do you get to visit your Mom? Would it be possible to buy enough prefilled cartos for that duration, and then take home the empties each visit to refill for her? It would be an expensive start for you to do for her, but it would pay for itself in the end if that's the main problem holding her back. (not wanting to refill).

Also, I would consider picking her up a Reo Grand, it's something she'll never have to mess with if you provide enough extra batteries and bottled juice. You can recharge for her as you visit.

Between the lovely Volts and the Reo, she'd have the best of both worlds.
Eventually, she'll prefer vaping over smoking, I imagine.

If it doesn't work this year, it might next. Or you might end up with a great Reo to call your own. Win Win.

Best of luck to you and your Mom.

I was the first in my household to start vaping. (3 months now and counting) I even managed to convince my oldest son to give it a try. He went strong for about 4 weeks, but suddenly stopped. Mainly because he didn't take my advice and buy some empty cartomizers.

2 weeks in, I heard him complain about the burnt taste, 4 weeks in I can't get him to vape anything but my tank system. My other 2 children I bought the flavor juice for them that should satisfy but they always have an excuse as to why they don't have time to give it a try.

Now, my husband saw what good it was doing for me and ordered himself an e-pipe and has been a happy camper for almost 2 months now.

I've tried explaining that yes, it's a lifestyle change. Of course it's easier to jump out of the car/truck and grab a pack of cigarettes but which makes more sense... 12.00 for a day of smokes or 20 for 2 weeks?

So yes, you can lead them to the PV but you can't make them taste it. Really annoying too! :)

I got my mom a Reo Mni Woodville and that finally satisfies her. Her Kr808s kept crapping out on her and although she still like her Ego T...she would rather not have so much hassle. With the Reo she fills the bottle and goes. She is in her 70s and loves to vape. She does not smoke at all now. She used to like the tobacco liquid when she dabbled with smoking a bit, but now she hates it and is stuck on the sweet stuff.
All I can say is just keep on doing what your doing. For my mom it was finding something easier to deal with. She she had the same mindset as yours by thinking it was a way to smoke where not allowed. This took about a year and during that year I had fell off the vape wagon myself. It was my mom that got me back on and now we are both totally smoke free.

Anyone else having trouble getting their family members to stop smoking?

Yep... tried to get my dad to vape and failed many times. He'll take a few hits... say how he understands the appeal and then go back to smoking the cheapest reservation cigs in existance. I've tried many times to explain why this is a superior product compared to the indian cigarettes but he wont budge.

I've almost given up.. not quite, but I'm at the point where it makes no sense to bug him anymore. I mean, I guess I can understand it... he grew up when Cadillacs still had big wings and the Dorsey Brothers were the big attraction on Crystal Beach... it was cool to have a cigarette in your fingers..

Its that kind of thing that I'm fighting.

Thanks for everyones stories, nice to know I'm not the only one :)
My mom called and told me that she's been vaping for two days. She didn't have a single cigarette.
I know she's not just saying that to make me feel better, because she had tonnes of questions for me.
She actually plugged in her PCC to charge, and will be taking it with her to the cottage. She's going with non smoking friends, so no one to bum cigaretes off of. So happy.
I guess she just needed stronger juice (last time she was over she took some bottles from me), 14mg was too light for her. She says that she didn't have the usual nic fits, but still felt as if she's missing something. Overall says it's bearable, and that she will try to stick to it. Manual batteries bug her so I'll give her a couple of automatic batteries so that she can hold the e-cig like she would an analog.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
I agree with the "weirdness factor" that someone mentioned. I felt uncomfortable vaping in public at first too, people always shoot you the weirdest looks (especially old people lol) when they can't figure out wtf it is that you're smoking. At work (I can vape freely there), a lot of people thought I was smoking weed, or some sort of a hookah. I still get random cuteye if I'm vaping at a bus stop or something, but I find that more and more people know what e-cigs are. I go outside to vape if I'm in a bar or a club, and someone always comes up to me with " is that an electronic cigarette? I heard of those" .
I'll also look into the Reo that everyone keeps mentioning, but I think that might be a bit too "out there" for her

After my first 6 months of vaping i was still naive in thinking that, with this amazing alternative, EVERYONE would quit smoking analogs. now that i am at the 1 year mark, i have given up.

I won’t force upon anyone my alternative to smoking (vaping), i let them come to me. if they genuinely want to stop smoking, i am there to talk to them, but i will no longer preach. not worth the effort.

To this day i get slack from smokers with witty remarks, but due to my dry sense of humor i just swing them right back.
Ex:
My neighbor - "still trying to quit with that funny looking thing in your mouth."
Me - "Still sucking on cancer? By the way, how is finger painting with your kids going, you must really like yellow!"
My neighbor - quietly walks back inside, staring at his tar colored fingers.

I have heard every excuse under the sun, and that is all they are... excuses. There is no way to make anyone switch from analogs. it is a process they have to willingly do on their own. When that time comes, guide them into the right direction.

There is nothing worse than someone who wants to vape , but bought the wrong kit (cheap gas station type).
That’s when I step in.

I may sound negative, but don’t let that discourage you. ALL of my close friends have switched from smoking to vapeing. Letting a person do the mental transition on their own is the only way I’ve seen it work. With that being said, don’t give up on friends and family, but don’t force them into doing something that they are obviously not ready to do.

I agree with you Buzz, 2 girls at work purchased starter kits after seeing mine, both still smoke also, they only use their ecigarette to vape when they can't smoke, hopefully they will be ready soon to try vaping exclusively.

Last cigarette 16th October, 2011. Forever grateful for the support and advice from ECF.

As many have said the old adage proves true here, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink".

Be there with advice and info but don't be a pusher (aka "E"-vangelist in this case), no one appreciates that on any topic or vice.

What's right for you and me isn't always right for everyone no matter how much we want it to be.

But hey at least we can be 100% satisfied with our own choices, take care and best of luck to ya.
