I had to pick up my son from work last night, so I filled a cartomizer for the drive. But instead of putting it on my trusty eGo battery, or Bartleby, or even my laser mod, I was a bit nostalgic and put it on one of my older kr8 white batteries with blue LED light. (wanted it to look like a cig while I was driving, right?)

As I was driving and vaping, I noticed flashing lights behind me. I was surprised to realize that I was being pulled over. The officer asked for my license and registration, and I reached over to the the floor of the passenger side to grab my purse. I asked him why I had been stopped, and he said, "You don't know?" I replied that I did not. He then stated, "Well you were driving while talking on your cell phone." I explained that I hadn't been and pointed out that my phone was put away in the purse which had been out of reach on the floor. He asked to see the phone and then said, "Oh, the phone lights aren't blue." I then realized that he must have seen the blue LED of the ecig so I showed it to him and how it worked. He, in fact, thought it was cool and said he hadn't seen anything like it before, and then proceeded to apologize for having pulled me over.

So moral of the story, if you're driving - don't vape an LED device.

So the cop assumed that a blue LED light was a cellphone?

He had no clue and just assumed the worst.

I'd like to see that one in court "Yes, your honor, I without a doubt saw her talking on her cell phone behind the wheel"

Great police work

Interesting... NY has some strict rules on this. In Washington at least you can get ticketed for talking on a cell while driving but its a secondary offense meaning you had to have been doing something ELSE first. The whole reason I got blue on mine is when I'm in public I think someone will be less likely to assume its a real cig due to the fact that its glowing blue.

Or you could just live somewhere that hasn't banned cell phones while driving.. :D

I actually have changed how I hold my 510 so as to cover the led, I get fewer strange looks when driving as a result. I just cup it in my hand, using my middle finger to switch on the battery, and my ring and pinky fingers to cover the led. It's becoming much more comfortable to do it this way, and I haven't had any negative experiences yet as a result.

I also hold my PV like a wand, with the button under my thumb. This is the most natural and convenient method for me personally, but it has the added benefit of covering up the LED.

While I am not an advocate of talking or texting or any other distractions while driving, I am probably going to be pulled over at some point because I currently carry 3 mobile devices with me... I have a Blackberry and a cell (both provided by work) and a personal WinMo phone... all of these have very bright screens. I do not text or answer my phone while driving, but occasionally I have to grab the blackberry or the WinMo to verify the address of my next assigned job. This is no more distracting than glancing quickly at a map, but I am just waiting for the day that some overzealous cop sees a mobile device lit up in my hand and pulls me over for texting while driving....

My girlfriend was recently pulled over for using her PV in her car.

She had just dropped her kid's off at school and was driving home through the school zone when the local hometown rural area cop that was parked in the "zone" area pulled out and started following her.

She said that he immediately pulled her over, and darted out of his car and up to the window and told her to hand over the crack pipe...

She said that she laughed out loud at him and said you mean my electronic cigarette...

Apparently our local PD is not so educated in the ways of the world, he continued that he saw her using a inhaling device and assumed it was a crack pipe.

Well she showed him her eGo, broke it down, showed him the carts, showed him the e juice, and demonstrated it's use and then showed him her 901 and 510 models, explained the different color LED's and charging, battery life between eGo's, 510's, 901's explained pass throughs, everything... spent like 10 minutes with the guy.

Apparently the cop was a smoker, and now wanted one for himself as the local PD was cracking down on smoking in cruisers, she gave him the website to where we got our eGo's and he said that he was ordering one as soon as he got back in his car.

Apparently when she pulled away he was doing just that, the following week he waived at her as he was taking a pull from his eGo.

Ignorance is the true enemy when it comes to PV's

What a great story! Thanks for sharing that. I think it is really cool that the officer was interested, asked questions and eventually got one himself.
Maybe he will now pass on the technology to fellow officers and administration. Vape for a better life!

Well, the e-cig can look a bit like a crack pipe, especially if you hold it between your thumb and forefinger. But in my going on eight years as a cop, I've never actually seen anyone drive and smoke a crack pipe (that's not to say it doesn't happen). I have seen people drive with the green leafy substance (it won't let me say the word, odd), and I have seen pipes for crack, ...., and pot made out of just about everything imagineable, so there's definitely a creative range out there.

Most cops haven't heard of e cigs. I wouldn't have if it weren't for the fact that I went looking. Now I've managed to hook a few others in the department. I'm not a road officer anymore, I work in our Major Felony Unit, which is horrendously stressful, and often if people didn't smoke when they came in, they do by the time they've been there a while. Being able to vape anywhere is a big plus.

It's our job to be suspicious, so if you get pulled over, just explain the device. You never know where you might gain another convert!

There was a post made here not too long ago (I can't find it now, it's not in my posting list so I'm guessing it's been deleted.) in which the forum member stated that they had gotten pulled over with a bottle of unmarked juice which the cop insisted on field testing. According to him/her the juice registered light purple when typically a positive hit is bright/dark purple and the cop took them in.

After reading that and then finding several news pieces about field kits hitting positive on everything from castille and liquid hand soaps to raw chocolate and even flour, I decided not to carry my liquids in the car unless absolutely necessary. I fill a bunch of extra cartos for day trips and if I have to be gone for longer I only take original supplier labeled bottles. Unfortunately I live in an area ripe with home drug labs, and the last thing I need is a hefty legal bill just to prove that my vaping supplies are legal to the rare but occasionally too real overzealous official.

I just bought joye 510 bats with no LED. I like them for several reasons : they feel like they are more powerful.. although we could chalk that up to them being newer. But more over, they are even EASIER to stealth vape with.

And now apparently, I won't have to worry about being pulled over.
