So my buddy told me I have to charge batteries or mods through a laptop/PS3/Xbox or whatever n not directly in the wall is this true?

Quite the opposite is true. Always use a wall adapter. Which would you rather lose if something went wrong--your laptop or a $3 wall wart? :D

You can charge your batteries from your computer in a pinch, if you have no access to a wall outlet, but not on regular basis. I also never leave my batteries on a charger unattended and never charge overnight.

My preference is also to charge batteries in a charger if possible. If the batteries are not removable from the device I charge with a high quality wall wart that has an amp output rating per outlet that will handle the charge current.

Wall warts are also not all created equal. If you buy one that is rated for 1A for $1.50 it may not deliver that current safely. I think I paid around $15 for one that is rated around 2A per channel. It does the job for my DNA40 with built in battery with minimal temperature rise.
