What are your guys' feelings on the shifting of political and economic power from the US to China? Personally I'm mixed - we depend on China and we can't really fault them for being good workers/politicians on the international stage. They are guilty of human rights abuses - but then again we've been guilty of being the most aggressive country in human history....

The Arab nations hate the non-believers in the west and scream about their holy war against us but they should be far more worried about the non-believers in China. It seems almost certain that eventually China is going to end up being the worlds most dominant superpower.

I agree with Pete. Just imagine what would happen if a terrorist car bomb went off in Beijing.

At the moment I am quite grateful to the Chinese. Without them I'd still be struggling to quit smoking.

Manufacturing cheap swag does not make a superpower. Fact of the matter is that China grows more and more dependent on America every day.

If the USA placed an embargo on China and refused to allow Chinese products into the country it would devastate the country. Who cares if they can build a billion widgets a day if there is nobody there to buy them?

Its not like the oppressed Chinese people that work in the factories can afford luxuries.

And if China put an embargo on the U.S.? Most American companies will fail... not to mention that China owns a quarter of U.S. foreign debt, more than any other nation in the world. There is a world outside of America Dumwaldo, and they buy more Chinese products overall than we do while we consume far more Chinese products than we export/make.

I believe the Arabs hate the West mainly because we colonized and exploited them during most of the 20th century. In contrast, China has only pumped money into the region while continually displacing the U.S. as many oil producing countries' primary customer.

It's not just the trade issue - we are currently dependent on China for our level of consumption. WE have a nearly $500 billion dollar trade deficit with China while China owns nearly a quarter of our foreign debt. Most of our retail and manufacturing industries have become dependent on China for cheap parts, computers, and circuitry. It is far more than a trade issue....
I am also afraid that China may now hold the trump card. Sure, we Americans could get along without trade from China, but it would hurt. And hard.

Not to be a jerk, but we wouldn't even have Ecigs without China.

Sad, though, huh?

Exactly. He's ignoring the fact that China is funding our current debt while we consume more Chinese products than we export. Not to mention the Chinese buying and investing in American companies, i.e. Hummer, GM.
I think you still have the old view of China dumwaldo. It's something very different now. Our E-cig suppliers who regularly visit China will probably be able to give a better opinion though.

but then again we've been guilty of being the most aggressive country in human history....

And we were "aggressive" at the request of many other nations who were/are unable to do it themselves..............

Make no mistake, we are and will continue to be the dominant power in the world. Not because of our military, but because of our open markets. If the U.S. were to close it markets and turn protectionist, yes it would be hard on us here, but it would destroy the world economy like no nuclear weapon ever could.

As is nearly half of all GM car production in the world... which will eclipse U.S. production by next year... I don't know what to think - should I be angry, scared? Because they aren't really harming us directly but eating away slowly at our dominance. But then again is it right that we should dominate?
Even my very reliable Honda motor car was actually made in china.

Not many, one - Saudi Arabia. Whose government has had close ties with U.S. and British oil companies even before the nation was established.
At the request of many nations who are more than happy to have our presence in the Middle East guaranteeing their oil supply.

This was predicted to happen by the year 2050 by MANY, at least as far as the world economy eventually depending on the Chinese economy as opposed to the US economy. It's a simple numbers game. As the level of the Chinese standard of living increases, what other outcome was possible, given China's 1.3 BILLION consumers, as compared to the US's .3 billion consumers? It was bound to happen sooner or later. The world-wide economic situation just hastened it.

So what are your personal feelings on it? It seems most people see it happening but don't want to address it openly because it's really hard to comprehend or deal with. We're so used to being dominant and here comes China overtaking us peacefully and economically while giving us money and cheap products...

We americans may have clawed our way to the top, but as a country we're all taking a nap in the penthouse now. We might have the military, but all our production and labor will be done in mexico, china, taiwan and korea. We don't want to work for our money Were all too busy watching american idol and reality tv. We are in the middle east for one reason only. Bush and Cheney were oil guys, nothing more(I used to back them up on the war, I no longer do) Which is why we're fighting with Iran and Venezuela now. Auto companies in the U.S. are going bankrupt because no one will give up their $70/hr job. When the banks were bailed out all the CEO's took bonuses for their failure. Power is shifting because we would'nt be caught dead picking lettuce, or sewing nike's for $10/hr.
