Roland, you are truely a Renaisance Man. vaping, IT man, Ham Radio, Animal Lover, an GOD only knows what else. I enjoy reading ALL of your posts. Thanks for the advice on my Vamo, it is working great now. I always wanted to get into Amatuer Radio, except years ago it was absolutely necessary to learn Morse Code and I never did get proficient enough to pass any licensing speed test, so I never tried. I understand now you do not need to know code, but I have other interests to occupy my time.

One of the reasons I got out of ham radio is how easy it is to get a license, making me sort of a snob I guess. When I got my license you had to know Morse at 13wpm for a General or Advanced and 20wpm for the Extra. I'm not even sure if you need Morse to get a license now. You also had to know electronics, radio specific, the regulations and a whole lot more. Now you can get a book, tape or CD of all the questions with the right answers, study that, and get your ticket. You have the license, but no knowledge other than a right answer.

I can still do CW at about 10wpm and with a little practice could get back to 13 or even 20 with enough practice. I'd need to read the rules again, but that's about it. Heck, ham radio got me into IT through a friend of a friend who needed help getting a network installed. That was back in the days of thicknet and thinnet and then lattisnet came along, precursor of 10baseT from Synoptics. That lead to a career in IT.

I just checked on the ARRL site, all you need to do is download the question pool, memorize as much as you can, and take the test. No Morse needed anymore. I used to work low power CW, ten watts, and it was a blast, had a Vibroplex keyer and a straight key as well. Oh well, days gone by I guess.

Yeah, but something is lost without sending CW by hand. I always laugh at the scene in "Independence Day" that shows morse messages being sent to tell everyone how to defeat the aliens. If they sent morse like that, no one would be able to read it. Keep in mind, Konstantine, I go back to the time when morse was used by the military in aircraft in flight, so I do have some fond memories about it.

Rabbit, thanks for the "promotion", LOL. I'm just another guy with a set of skills and experiences. Nothing special, believe me.

Still can't beat the old stuff, but in a way they cheated. The CW looks like it was sent using an electronic keyer rather than strictly by hand. I was copying about every other character with the background noise on the video and a radio in the background here. It's like riding a bike, you never forget. The guy I went to work for in networking was a ham. He could copy 70wpm and send it with a straight key strapped to his thigh like he did in the Navy. Now that's fast communications and those were random five letter groups, not words!

As an aside, my wife just got a scam email regarding an attempted security breach of her Amex account that looked quite authentic. Consider this a "BOLA" be on the lookout!

Here's the perfect dance for you, Kon. Second Hand Dance at the Grassroots Festival 1993 - YouTube

I first saw the Second hand Dance Company at the Grassroots Festival (right here in my hometown) years ago. I don't know what happened to this group, but I really loved this one and a tango they did in bathrobes.

Last time I attended Grassroots (last summer) they had Galumpha instead. They are good, too, but I think they copied a lot of what Second Hand Dance did before them. For instance, this Second Hand Dance Company - YouTube and this Galumpha and Jablkon performing "Velcro" - YouTube

Time for another flower photo. Deb said she liked red roses, so here are some climbing a wall. Again, this was at Sonnenberg Gardens.

Hubby said Velcro Balls didn't do much for him and I said "C'mon, it's Velcro Balls...that is pretty funny!"

After vacillating all winter...looking up prices on the internet....talking to a couple of local vendors...I have finally made my purchase of....Dun-ta-da-dun!!!....The Round Pen. It is a 60', 4 rail, galvanized metal tubing, pen with a 4' bow gate. That's 15 - 12' panels, saddle clamps, plastic caps for the posts and the 4' bow gate. A little shopping around saved us about $300 but it still cost me a pretty penny:) The deposit is down and the delivery is next Wednesday:)

This will be a nice addition to the property and the little horsey and I will be enjoying this for quite some time. Usually I shop used but there just wasn't anything used available and what little there was when I looked is over priced. Piecing together a used metal round pen a few pieces at a time from different areas of the state was going to take a lot of running around, a lot of time and a lot of gas. On top of that, we have an 8' trailer that can handle a heavy load but panels are often 10' and 12' long so wrestling them into and out of our trailer would be a pain. I'm a girl for gosh sakes.

We decided that a wooden corral, while cheaper, was going to take too many of our precious days off and it is a lot of physical labor. We should be able to put together the metal round pen in one weekend.

I am so excited!!!!

Wow! I'm so excited for you! You bought a round pen! I know how you've been shopping around and playing with ideas. You sure did your homework, and I'm sure you got the best deal out there. Once it's delivered and assembled, I want to see pictures!

Sandy, I like living in the 21st Century and have no desire to go back at the 1950's let alone the 1800's. I want the water to come out of the faucet, hot and cold, and flush the toilet when needed. I like long, hot, showers. I like the AC when its hot in the summer. I also want to chat on ECF when I get a minute to, LOL. Oh yeah, try and hire a housemaid today, a little more expensive than a washer/dryer and the power to run them, plus today you better have disability insurance for them! Some people are perfectly happy "living off the grid", but they still, ultimately, use that grid in some way on a daily or at least occasional basis.

awsum I enjoy my creature comforts also...old mate has solar panels...hes kicking himself he didn't get more few years back.when our government was giving great rebates..not that the saving were good this summer..due to all the grey and rainy days...hes very power aware...little power remotes to turn off all stand by lights....compared to others around here...most on average bills come in at...$400 plus for 3mths...ours is around $1oo...but buying air con this summer put it up to $200....and as far as house maids...he has me....lol

btw about internet and other stuff.

For now i use a wireless link to the office 2km away. Very redundant with UPS and all weather conditions it performs 100%.
The neighnours think they have secure networks(wep,WPA, WPA2) LOL, i use those as a backup only but never needed them yet.

On more difficult situations in case nothing works generally i have my VX-8R Radio to communicate and pre-defined frequencies to speak with people i want to. We have a schedule for example If it's monday we are listening on 146.125MHz if it's Friday on 435.650MHZ etc etc.
I am not a prepper or something but if the system fails everything is good. I can even get weather data directly from satellites (assuming they work) or rely on a barometer. For food we have access to animals, eggs and many plants and fruits available.
Solar panels for energy and generators.
maybe im not reading it all correctly....but after the other day when you said...the poor amount of money your on...and how you only had a tomato to eat...I did wonder how you survive....so seeing your getting net, power, hot water....also you say access to animals, eggs, and many plants and fruits available..are you meaning when( needed ) you can get these things for free..?
