It snowed a bit here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland but Mrs. Wabbit and I drove to the store anyway. She said she read an article about how many words a woman used a day 30,000 to a man's 15,000. She said the reason has to be because women have to repeat everything.

I turned to her and said "What?"
I love your wife! :D

I use VISA gift cards for everything, which kinda work the same way. Once you register them, they work just like regular VISA cards. The only problem I've had is that they're limited to US purchases only. I have them in my PayPal for eBay purchases and most of the time international orders go through, but once in awhile you run into an out-of-US vendor that has their account set up funny. It's only happened to me once - a vendor in Canada. For gas, you have to prepay so that you can specify exactly how much you wanna charge. If you do the fill'er up thing and just swipe the card, it will pre-authorize an amount that might be more than your available balance. I do this for the stack of gift cards that get ridiculously low and hard to use - "$4.67 on #4, please."

I go with gift cards instead of refillables because refillables require your Social Security number, and gift cards don't. ;)
Oh thanks for shsring! Thats great info to know! We had a couple charges unknown so we have a new card now ...

They didn't kick you out of here yet? I took off before they had the chance...:D

Yeah! Great to hear from you!
Welcome p-nut!

Have a great day/ night all!

Hey Konstantine, what the heck are you doing with that transformer?

Hey Roland Good morning. A lab power supply, mine is 0-30V 0-3A and a friend gave me a new board for a 0-30V 0-10A power supply but it requires a bigger transformer.
I will probably build a new one rather than destroying the old one.

Roland,

I originally looked at a NAS box setup with Raid 1, but the cost of the box and two 1TB Sata Drives was just too expensive. I have dual hard drives in each of my desktops setup with Raid 1, knowing full well that any virus will be duplicated, but I run a full version of Norton's latest software and have had only one virus in many, many years. I purchased a Western Digital USB Drive and clone each of my hard drives to it every 6 months just in case. All of my documents and my wife's documents as well as pictures are duplicated on each computer so far so good.

I'm a Norton fan myself, but my XP machine got infected with a Java virus that played havoc on it, with a weekly full scan by Norton. The only way I found it was booting into safe mode trying to find out what was making the machine so slow then running a full scan. If I do go the NAS way, RAID doesn't work too well in laptops, nowhere to stick the extra drives, I may build another machine just to run full scans on the NAS on a daily basis. When I was in IT, I had two dedicated machines, one that ran the backup system and controlled the tape library, and a second that ran full scans of the disk arrays on a daily basis. They were both Pentium Pro quad processor machines with gig connections to make sure everything got done every day. The full backup, even with that much horsepower, took from Saturday night at 10 until four or five on Sunday afternoon.

With the price drops on drives, terabyte about 80 or 90 bucks or even less on sale, going RAID 1 isn't very expensive at all, given the redundancy. I've thought about the online services, but with four machines that gets expensive really fast and the backups are out of my control being in the "cloud".

Konstatine, I built a rack mounted regulated 0-18 volt at 0-30 amp DC supply some years ago. It was had a conventional transformer and must have weighed fifty pounds. I added fans on the power transistors just to make sure they didn't get too warm, and they were each on a separate 4x6 inch finned heat sink. I used it to run my IC-745, TM-721 and a bunch of other transceivers. Wish I had kept it, but when I got divorced it got given away to a friend. I think he's still using it.

Tail, make sure you get a guy rope on that palm! My neighbor has a stump grinder, but I usually just cut the stumps off an inch or so above the ground so the mower can go over them safely. Mother Nature can take care of stump removal hat way.

Been a busy morning so far. Bo is walked and fed and the dishes are cleaned up from that. Got an order in with WL for nicotine and another pile of flavors. Helped someone with a "connection" problem and I'm still on my first cup of coffee. It is cold out, about 25 when I got up, but it may get warmer, maybe 45, later but at least it's supposed to be sunny today.

Norton????? Norton was good in the old days back in 96-2000, from 96 and after i use kaspersky, i NEVER had a virus even when i ran a few of them.

Mine is a switching power supply, newer technology which required less parts and easy to filter and cool down. I may add a small fan (for fun :D) but it can run quietly too.

I went with my boss and cutted the hoofs of the female horse (is she called a maire?) She prepares a new baby horse :D and then we went and bought extra pair of work boots. I'll try them on the horses soon.

Yes, but it's spelled mare. So you'll be dealing with a foal in the spring? What fun.

Hey Roland,

The other reason that I haven't purchased a NAS is that Win 7 has "homegroups". My system is running Gig Ethernet to a Gig Router and with everything in the same homegroup and sharing enabled, I can run programs from one computer to another, trade and backup files to one another and sync them back and forth. With two desktops and two laptops it makes life almost as easy as a NAS system. Again, I know a virus can jump around the system if it gets in, but all of the boxes have the latest Norton suite, free from Comcast and they are constantly scanned every day.

Good Morning, Volties.

Have to send in my taxes this morning and then get on the road to clean a house, go the bank and hit the grocery store. Decided on an easy dinner since housecleaning wears me out. Homemade split pea soup from the freezer and biscuits.

26 degrees outside. Ach!!!! that is cold. Supposed to warm up a bit next week.

My tree honeysuckles are working it and have pretty green leaves budding out. The forsythia is trying to bloom. I noticed some daffodils coming up around the yard.

The rads and lettuce I started int he greenhouse flower boxes are coming up. This is a fun project. Maybe within a couple od weeks we will have some nice salad.

Have a great day, Volties.

It's snowing again. We got a fraction of an inch last night, and this doesn't look like it'll amount to much more, but still, I wish spring would hurry up and arrive. Meanwhile, here's some bee balm that I hope will cheer those of us still in the winter doldrums.

Howdy everyone, I am humbled by your warm welcome back. I forgot how to do multiple quotes so if I missed liking your post it was not intentional. I had to take a break from the computer (except shopping) because I found myself doing exactly what I have been preaching to my Daughters for the last ten or so years, "you are missing life while you stare into that thing" Between this forum and 2 others I was up to about 4 or 5 hours a day (and I don't even do face book) staring at the tube and not doing all the things I had planned for my retirement so I decided to put the time to better use which may or may not have been better... Anyway I will be by to check out this thread at least once a day and try to keep my computer time to a reasonable amount. For the record it was hard to not stop in and chat but I did get a bunch of stuff done.

I love the smell of honeysuckle! For us ladies interests, if you have a World Market nearby check out their soaps. They have a lovely bar of honeysuckle that is to die for! Since I gave up cigarettes, I do allow myself to splurge on soaps since I can smell them now. I picked up some other soaps, but the honeysuckle is the best so far. And it's nice on the skin! :)

Welcome Back 1st Officer

Frankly, being a retired Bank IT Officer, I have spent many years in front of a computer screen and continue to do so. I have no idea what civilization would do if computers, I Phones, Blackberrys and I Pads just disappeared. My life is on the computer in the Winter. In the Summer, I am out and about, traveling, gardening, kayaking and fishing, but I can't stand the cold and most of my children, grandchildren and friends keep in touch daily on the computer. Glad to see you back, happy vaping and keep posting.
