Gawd, what the hell is wrong with people?!? What part of their brains are so damaged that they can dump or abuse or even just look the other way and contribute to the suffering of animals. I'm not being overly dramatic when I say it literally hurts my heart when those commercials come on and I see those shaking scared, sad, hurting, lonely faces. The news last night had a story about a puppy dumped along side the hiway, and as they drove off he/she was running to try and catch up. Had to be rescued. Who does that?!?!?! If you don't want them, drop em off near a vet or shelter. Geeeez!

That's just cold. They're the same kind of people that hit and run leaving people hurt and dieing and it happens every day. Sick demented souls and it seems there is getting to be more of them.

Yeppers - And they aren't sweetened with aspartame (which is a plus). They are sweented with Splenda.

I don't do artificial sweeteners, but working for Cornell Catering, we have to offer sugar and a variety of artificial sweeteners with the coffee and tea, and I find Splenda goes the fastest of them. What is it with this sweetener? Does it taste better? Is it healthier? I find that diet sodas often taste metallic, which I don't like. My defense is to drink regular soda sweetened with sugar if I drink soda at all. What about stevia? Has anyone tried that? What do you think of it?

Four years to retirement and I can think about that, Raynes. ;)

I need an anti inflammatory e-liquid, though. My degenerative arthritis is killing me. I've had it since my teens and a knee surgery I swear was meant only to bilk my parents of their savings in order to line the pockets of the "sports surgeon" who performed it. They didn't have arthroscopic surgery available back then and my forever swollen knee just doesn't work well. Now, the rest of the joints are getting a bit achy, from a genetic aspect. And to think I want to retire to Oregon for the mild weather because I can't handle temps over 85 or under 40 for extended periods. /sigh

I had arthroscopic surgery on my knee, and it still isn't right. I do find that over time, I have either figured out how not to aggravate it, or else it's getting better with not being aggravated. A bit of both, I suspect. I tore cartilage and ligaments. The doctor told me it's an injury football players often get. I'm fine on that right leg till I extend it fully and put all my weight on it, something I used to do when standing on a chair to get to a high shelf, stepping up on a high step with something heavy I was carrying, and, most important, when mounting a horse from the ground. Nowadays, I only use a mounting block, which I hear is better for the horse's back and the saddle (less torque to both), which justifies my minor disability.

For anti-inflammatory stuff, try something with omega 3, like flaxseed or fish oil. That may help a bit.

I posted this elsewhere, but I thought you folks might get a kick out of it:

For a few weeks I've had squatters on the property. They decided to build a nest (mostly of mosses) on my front porch light. Not generally a good idea. The site is not what I would think would be ideal for flycatchers. It is right next to the main point of egress for one old broad, generally accompanied by a mastiff the size of a pony, and two overly-energetic young adults. As soon as I discovered that the adult birds were committed to that particular site, I put tape over the light switch so that no one would accidentally cook the eggs.

Mom and Dad are not happy about our comings and goings, but we try to move through the area quickly to disturb them as little as possible. Today I sneaked a picture of two of the nestlings. They melt me.

What is it with birds over lights? Maybe they do like the heat? We have a back porch/shed that last year, I left the door open, and swallows built a nest on top of a bare lightbulb socket. This year, we close the door, and they have to go elsewhere. I miss seeing them raise their young, but when it came time to teach the young'uns to fly, my cat thought it was a feast day. I guess they are better off finding another nesting site.

What a lovely contest, Uncle. A very cool way to promote acceptance and diversity, which can be extended to so many others as well. And way cool of SI and the other vendors to help promote awareness.

Hope you feel better soon.

If you think that's bad, there was a cute little chihuahua mix the other day on the news that some freak had strapped a bomb to and set it off. Miraculously, the dog survived (with third degree burns) and is back home with its mom. That guy really needs to get caught...

They won't do anything to him, just a slap on the wrist. Look at Micheal Vic and what all he did.

We are big animal lovers here to,since we are very rural deer hunters are always dumping out their hounds after hunting season it makes me so mad I could literally kill. Last spring someone dumped a kitten out here to and how she made it to the house with our Rotties I have no clue. She's the first cat that I have ever had,I tried to give her to my Mom but she refused to take her. Now I'm glad she didn't Kitty,I never knew cats were so much fun.

Cats are awful good company, Raynes; very soothing and healing. And awesomely fastidious.

Good morning all! It's been a little while since I got to read up on everything.
How's everyone been? Tell me all the gossip!
*sits and stares at the computer like a 15 year old girl*

My gossip is that my extended family (quite a lot of them) rented a big place nearby for the week to visit me and the lovely area I live in, so I've been vacationing and commuting. A few days ago, my brother and his wife and their 2 little boys and my stepmother came out to visit Penny and ride her. Penny loves little kids. She loves all little beings, puppies, kittens, anything little and helpless. I guess it's her motherly instincts. I wish she was well-built enough that I could justify breeding her. She'd love to be a mother, and her personality is to die for, but with my luck, if I bred her to a well-built stallion, she'd have a foal that would be feisty and malformed. Not gonna go there. I've often thought she would make an excellent foster mother for an orphaned foal, if they couldn't find a mare that was giving milk because she lost a foal. One time they put a weanling that had just been separated from his mother in with Penny and the gelding she shared a pasture with. The gelding, who bossed Penny, charged the foal, and Penny stood firmly between them, and I guess she knew the gelding wouldn't hurt her. For the first few days, she protected that foal till he fit into their little herd. He tried nursing from her, and of course, she couldn't oblige, but she just moved away from him, didn't kick or anything. After about a week, the foal started getting sassy from all the spoiling, and then Penny got more assertive with him, making threat gestures when he got too uppity, etc.

But anyway, my brother brought his 2 little boys, ages 5 and 3. He figured the older boy would like riding a horse, but he wasn't sure of the younger one. The older boy did well, even starting and stopping Penny by himself when I told him how to use the reins. He couldn't quite coordinate steering. The younger one, the moment he got on the horse had a smile from ear to ear, and he really took to it. I led him out to the top of a steep hill and told him now, from the back of a horse, where he was higher than the adults, maybe for the first time in his life, he could see out over the countryside. He loved it and exclaimed over all the yellow flowers in the field. A man after my own heart! I wish they lived closer and I could give him more rides!

I got a thingy from my brother's camera with photos, but I can't figure out how to download the photos into iPhoto. My brother e-mailed me some, but he gave me the "card" to download the rest. I'll see if I can share some with you all once I get that straightened out.

I may see them tomorrow, and they are going home Sunday, so you may not hear from me again for a while. I have to work Monday and Tuesday, and I will be riding on Sunday. Send sun vibes to me, since the weekend is supposed to be rainy, and this evening, we got a lot of rain and wind. We'd like nice weather for the next couple of days. OK?

Yesterday was lovely and cooler than it's been, and we took everyone to Havana Glen Park just south of Montour Falls, NY. We walked up the short gorge to a modest waterfall and then the kids had a blast playing in the playground while the adults relaxed. I loved it that the kids were all content, not screaming or crying, as so often they do. Indoors, 4 kids under 6 can cause enough decibels that I just want to crawl away. I don't know how everyone else can stand it. I love the kids, but I really have a problem with the noise. Am I weird for being so intolerant?

I suppose I should add that I'm alread hot under the collar because of a local story today about some idiot that left his Golden Retriever in a locked car, and it died of hyperthermia.

Someone needs to take that idiot and lock them up in a hot car. Oh it just makes me furious and I bet the excuse will be,"I didn't mean to be gone that long or "It didn't seem to be that hot to me".Now that's a textbook case of a human being that needs to be altered.Baaad gene pool there.

Uncle, I hope you feel better soon. Meanwhile: Wow! What a contest! I'm going to have to do some research for my favorite quote or something. If nothing else, it gets people searching for info and thus becoming informed. Meanwhile, my fave of your examples is: Entry #5: “Quote By a Famous Gay Person”

"Be yourself, everyone else is already taken." . . .
