Raynes -- and everyone else, too -- you have to see this if you want to compare reining and dressage. Lots of fun. Dressage vs Western, Horses - YouTube

Now I enjoyed this video a LOT!

I'm not so sure about the Lorenzo video though. That reminds me more of circus riding. I don't like seeing horses or any animals in circuses. Why is he standing up & jumping on the horses back? I know they are big but.... The horses and scenary were beautiful though. That's just my honest opinion. Hope I didn't offend...

It's not just with horses either. When I groom my dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, it has a relaxing and calming effect on both of us. His coat is very long and very thick, even for a cavy. He loves it as much as I do. I massage him all over his body, sometimes he will close his eyes. It really reinforces that bond. Actually I think he hates when the session is over.

I think touching and grooming bonds humans and all domesticated animals. I don't know about snakes and lizards, but maybe them, too. Even people need it. Ever hear that if a baby isn't held enough, he grows up with learning disabilities and all sorts of emotional complexes?

Lizzie, Sandy is right some days its one step forward and 10 steps back but every training session needs to be short and end on a positive note. Every minute you spend with Wiseguy your both in training and learning to communicate with each other. Grooming is great,I go out and drink coffee while mine eat.
Bonding takes time, sometimes yrs. Every time your with Wiseguy he's teaching you how to communicate with him. Its a learning time for both of you. So don't think he doesn't like you,he has no reason not to like you he's training you to.Your both learning.
Just like this abused cat that I adopted that Blues was kind enough to help me with, its taken a yr for her to train me how to communicate with her and multiple scratches. Once she got me trained we're fine. Sounds crazy right? Far from it--how many times do dog owners get up to let their dogs out to play knowing they have already been outside? Or gets up to get them a treat,or plays with them when they bring a toy? Millie has to be rubbed first thing when I walk in the study,if I don't she'll hiss and scratch at me. So who's trained ? Me. Millie also refuses to drink out of her water dish if I'm up she'll howl until I get up and let her drink out of the bathroom sink.
She has me well trained.
Us humans are funny we say our pets are "spoiled" that's our way of saying our animals have trained us well. When we say our pets are spoiled rotten that means our pets have trained us very well. We don't like to admit that animals are smarter than we are but in truth they really are IMO

I agree about animals training humans. And they can be incredibly subtle about it, too. At one time, a vet told me to do carrot stretches with Penny to get her more flexible. Carrot stretches are fun for a horse because you hold a treat along the horse's side and get them to reach around for it, gradually holding the treat farther back so the horse reaches farther and becomes more flexible. Anyway, once Penny learned she couldn't turn around to get the treat, she had to stretch around for it, she loved the exercises. After all, it meant lots of treats! So, soon, I'd be grooming Penny in the barn, and when Penny decided it was time for a treat, she would do a carrot stretch all on her own, without me offering the treat first. Of course, I thought this was so cute, I'd offer a treat to her, even though I hadn't asked for her to do a stretch then. So Penny had me trained. If she decided it was treat time, all she had to do was reach around to her side with her nose!

So You Think Barrel Racing is Easy? Think Again. - YouTube Barrel racing and training is how I made my living before I became a nurse. Can't say I enjoyed running barrels.

You didn't enjoy it? Why not? I've dabbled in it at a trot with Penny, but I never really did it. The hardest for us was the keyhole, where we had to turn around fast in a small area and go back between the barrels. We'd always go over the line, because Penny couldn't make the turn at the speed I asked, so her turn was too large. It's a delicate balance between speed and control, I learned.

Here's another thing I tried with Penny, but only at a walk. Well, we did trot dragging the pole and carrying it out in front like a lance. Garrocha - YouTube Penny was lame that winter, but I was boarding at a place with an indoor ring, so I was trying to think what we could do in a ring at a walk that was fairly interesting, when the weather was too bad for trail riding.

Oh, yes. I held the reins, not like this guy. I had the pole in one hand and the reins in the other. Penny, unlike some English horses, was trained to neck rein. I believe it's something every horse should know.

The discipline is known as doma vaquera.

FANTASTIC !!! LOVED IT !!! There's not really that much difference at all. Once you see them side by side. Heck I was doing some dressage moves and didn't even know it. You dressage riders just make it look so much more sophisticated. Thank you so much for sharing

Barrel racing is tough on a horse's legs. I did it b/c I needed money, going from town to town, three races a night if they were close enough well it gets old.Back then there were a lot of "Jack pot" rodeos and they paid good.TX was full of them,I guess they still are.
The thing with barrel racing is you got to have a horse that loves to run.

I, too, wonder about standing and jumping on a horse's back. First, does he wear soft shoes? As for circus, lots of dressage riders don't like anything that reeks of dressage in a circus kind of atmosphere, and they even have resisted musical rides for that reason, but they have become very popular, and they aren't all that much different than the dressage tests at shows, except you can combine the moves in your own way to add artistic expression.See Edward Gal & Moorlands Totilas Kur 89.800% FEI WORLD CUP DRESSAGE 2010 Hertogenbosch - YouTube (Does this link work? OK, this one works for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIQLSYVPbQE Edward Gal and Totillas were quite a pair, world famous. Unfortunately, the horse was sold for big bucks (he wasn't owned by Gal, just ridden by him), and since then, he hasn't made such a splash. I think it was an awful shame to break up this pair. Talk about a connection between a human and a horse!

You know... I joined ECF to learn all about vaping. I am getting such an education on this thread you would not believe. Being a city girl born and bred, I never had exposure to such amazing things. Never seen anything like this, only rodeos now and then on TV, not even on Animal Planet. (I love watching rodeos by the way.) Now the only programs on there are such things as... hillbilly handfishing or finding bigfoot. Who is interested I ask!? But this... TV has sooo much garbage on it now. Nothing like this... This I would love to see. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! SandySu, Raynes, Renolizzie... Thank you from this city girl! :thumb:

That's a good post, JoAnn. There are horses here at the ranch but I don't know a lot about horses. There are people who work here because they know a lot about horses. I don't get in their way. I have learned things about horses over time but I know dogs and cats. I love to read the posts from Sandy, Raynes, and Lizzie. I have learned a lot just from their posts.

So there you go ladies. You have two students and you didn't even know it. Thank you for all the information!!!

My hats off to you Blues, really b/c you know about the most dangerous domesticated animals of all CATS. A good guard cat wins over a Rotti every time.

That was truly beautiful... so graceful. You could feel their union, moving as one... like a dance. It was a shame to break them up. Dressage is something to watch. :)

What is going on? I can't see this video, either, and I want to. It's like the one of Totillas, the first one, which was just a black square with no video. Some of the other videos were acting like that this evening. I'll try again tomorrow. Maybe my computer is exhausted or something.

I saw the Spanish Riding School Lipizzans back in the '60s on their first US tour and then again on their most recent tour (late '90s or early 2000s?). They are trained to an amazing level, one not usually reached by even the most competitive dressage riders. Whatever the discipline, horse training taken to such a high level inspires awe.
