I see it was a wild night at the Old Ranchero.

Good morning, peeps. Looks like it will be windy today so need to get stuff done early. I'm watering right now. I'll have to get out some repair gear for the drip system since every time I do yard clean up, no matter how careful I am, I cut through the line to some plant or sprinkler.

Hope you have a great day peeps.

I heard back from the tack company. She thinks a regular, traditional harness would be fine but I am noticing that I have to buy pads [and pads is one thing I hate about my current harness but maybe it will be better with the better harness] and breeching separately. I asked for the cost including those items. So, let us see what the real cost will be.

Oh, I forgot to ask her if that would be in the Betathane.

Hi Volties, hope everyone is doing okay. There is a crew out on the road FINALLY bringing the natural gas line through. We were supposed to have it all set by Thanksgiving, but I guess these guys like to do things the hard way. They will be bringing our line down the driveway today or tomorrow. I wish them luck, we have plowed snow piles as tall as me all along the length of the drive. Maybe I will be able to take a few pictures.

I see I need to come here more often at night, I'm missing all the fun! On the other hand, maybe it's better that I catch up later and stay out of trouble.

Yeah - It was busy last night alright. Took me forever to catch up!! I was wondering if you were still buried in snow up there. Until today, we were still under a Snow Emergency. No travel unless you are emergency service personnel. 'Course, too many people ignore that little tidbit.

Hiya Lizzie. Don't work too hard.

*****

It's snowing here now, but I don't think it'll amount to much of anything except an additional bother on top of what we already have. I looked yesterday. The county road to my place has one lane plowed. Now ... you can imagine what happens when two vehicles traveling in the opposite directions meet face to face. I'm not going out there. Just sayin'.

So - I've been sequestered indoors. Gave my camera a bit of a workout when we had a bit of sun on Tuesday. Maybe you folks may enjoy the pics:

Oh, I forgot to ask her if that would be in the Betathane.

I finally decided to look up the difference between Betathane and Biothane, and I learned a lot about harnesses. There's another similar material called granite, too. Along with all the discussion, someone recommended a certain company as the very best, and I checked, and they make harnesses for minis. See Camptown Harness - camptownharness.com and horseharness.com - 800-717-0957

Things I learned: The buckles should be stainless steel or, if they are brass, their tongue should be stainless steel so it doesn't bend out of shape. The saddle should have a tree. This is because in a 2-wheeled cart, when people get in and out of the cart, it puts pressure on the horse's back. You can go treeless if you have a 4-wheeled cart. The fit of the harness is really important for the horse's comfort, and the cheaper harnesses never fit well.

These are just basic points that were repeated over and over. People were discussing which material they preferred, and which material the lines should be vs the harness itself. I think a lot of people liked granite for the lines.

I hope this helps. I just got curious, even though I never plan to drive a horse, so I'll never be buying a harness.

Rave, I love your pictures!

We have a reprieve from the cold. When I got up this morning, it was 15 degrees F, and it felt like springtime! I think it must be warmer by now, maybe it even climbed to the 30s.

Also, there was a thin dusting of snow on the ground in the morning, but there's bright sunshine, and I see that melted, so we just have the spots of snow from that big snowstorm a week ago.

The tree is important on the harness. The Camptown harness is said to be camparable to the ComfyFit but is $150 more than the ComfyFit. Chimicum Tack is easy to talk with. We have been mailing back and forth. A traditional harness from Chimicum Tack will end up being about $400 with breeching and pads and the ComfyFit is about $650. I like dealing with a company that is clearly set up for and likes the minis and is willing to take the time to discuss the details.

I think I will end up with a better bridle, larger surcingle, breeching and the new harness would have a strap from the breast collar to the belly band which would keep in place. Those would all be improvements over my current set up without getting too pricey. I still like the ComfyFit better but I'm not sure I like it $250 better.

Rave - Great photos. Look how puffy those cute little guys are.

We were down to 33 degrees last night but by the time I got up it had improved to 42 degrees. It is cloudy and I really wish it would rain. We need the moisture. In the meantime, I am trying to water while the temps are up a bit. I got soaked fixing the back berm's water system including my leather cowboy boots. I need to put on the rubber boots to fix the next watering zone.
